Title: Philip Nye and Betsie Green
Post by: broaway on Monday 27 December 21 13:44 GMT (UK)
A Belated Merry Christmas to everyone
Can anyone find any information on a birth for Betsie Green DoB 1867 ?? Lincolnshire
A marriage to a Philip Nye Dob 1867  ? Bloomsbury
I think they were living in Penge S,E. London Marriage maybe 1890?
Betsie Green is a bit of an elusive butterfly at the moment trying to trace her and family
If anyone could shed any light on either of these two it would greatly be apreciated

Kind Regards

On the 1901 census, Betsy's birthplace is a place called "Whitapot" in Lincolnshire. Searching online, the only possible place I could find whose name bore any resemblance to the one on the census return was Whitepit, a hamlet close to the village of Swaby in Lincolnshire.

Working my way back, I think I found Betsy in 1881, before her marriage to Philip. She is working as a general servant for the Wood family in Friskney, Lincolnshire.

Whitepit is too small to have its own parish register, so I looked at the parish register for the larger nearby village of Swaby.

There I found this entry:

25th December 1863: Betsy Green, daughter of John & Ann Green, abode: Whitepit, father's occupation: labourer.

I would say that, on the balance of probabilities, this is almost certainly her baptism, seeing as Whitepit is such a small place. However, if you would like to confirm it beyond all doubt, I would suggest purchasing the marriage certificate from the General Register Office:

By the time of the 1911 census, Philip had become a widower. This means that Betsy must have died between 1901 and 1911. There is only 1 possible death registration in that time period in Croydon, Surrey (where Philip and Betsy were living in 1901):

Hi

Thankyou so much that has made a lot things a lot clearer,  Edith Isobel Nye DoB 1903 was my wifes Grandmother and there s a lot of discrepancy over her siblings.
Those days there were large families cousins and in-laws in the same house for convenience,  Penge has been mentioned by family members
Just waiting for a reduction on a well known family research site
Thank you again

Kind Regards

Using the GRO index Philip Nye and Bessie Green had the following children registered Croydon
with mother's maiden name Green
Philip George 1891
Gladys Annie 1899
Hilda May 1901
Edith Isobel 1903
-----------
1891 census Philip George is 3 weeks old
1901 George is 10 (Philip George)
Gladys is 1  (Gladys Annie)
1911
Hilda (Hilda May age 9) is with her grandmother Eliza Nye age 73

The other children May and Edith both age 4 are not her sisters, cousins no doubt. Her sister Edith should be 7 not 4.

Added
1911 census
Her sister Gladys age 11 is a visitor with Walter and Annie Bell in Wainfleet St Mary Lincolnshire

Thank you that blew some cobwebs away  looking at that Eliza age 73 would have been Philips Mother.
Just trying t assess where Walter and Annie Bell fits in.
Would they be related to Betsie Green as they are from Lincolnshire.
would Gladys be living with them to ease the situation with Philip being a widower??

thank you given food for thought

Annie Bell's maiden name was Green, going by the GRO records for the children in 1911. censuses have her b Wainfleet c1877

This is the most likely candidate on 1881 Census - in wainfleet

John Green    58
Ann Green    47
Annie Green    4

RG11; 3254; 97; 6;

So looks like she's Betsey's younger sister. Wouldn't be surprised if they took on one of the Nye children to help Phillip out. Probably rather sexist to suggest this but all the Bell children were boys and they may have wanted a girl about the house to help out !  (that was the family explanation for my great grandmother's informal adoption by a particular couple after her parents' deaths)

According to Freebmd James Green married Ann Eno not John Green.

There are a lot of girls named Betsy Green circa 1903

Proof will be in the certificate the marriage of Philip Nye to Bessie/Betsy Green, to get their fathers names and occupations, the names of the witnesses may also be of use.
