Title: Are there Gun maker records for London and Birmingham 1774-1796?
Post by: Wayne Cook on Saturday 01 January 22 01:51 GMT (UK)
I am trying to locate any records for Richard Perkins Gun maker between 1774-1796 (London and Birmingham).

Apprenticeship Indenture record dated 28 April 1774 wherein a William SHEPHERD Citizen & Gun Maker of London, took on a Richard PERKIN as an apprentice for a period of 7 years from 31 March 1774

As my Richard Perkins was a Gun maker in Birmingham where his children were born 1796 onwards but I can not seem to find his marriage.

Is this a possibility as he spent at least 7 years in London as an apprentice. Needs work

Richard Perkin of St Olave Southwark married Ann Clark by license at St Luke Finsbury 16 November 1794. She was of the parish.
Witness Robert Cowell Clark

Pigot's Directory 1841 Richard Perkins 267 Newtown Row Birmingham- Pistol Maker

White's Directory 1849 Richard Perkins 19 Lench Street Birmingham - Pistol Maker
Same 1852 & 1855

This is probably his son Richard who took over the business.

Thanks, we are after the Same Richard Perkins father of Thomas Perkins who arrived in Tasmania 1833/34 as a convict, he was a gun and pistol finisher by trade. His father Richard in the 1841 and 1851 censuses is a pistol maker. I have Richards christenining 1799 in Birmingham, parents Richard and Ann.

I was assisted a few years ago with research into London gunmakers in my family by a gentleman who has an extensive research collection into gunmakers. I'll dig out his contact details but he may not still be around.

His name is Stan Cook, from Quainton, Bucks. Here's a link to a description of his research.

The email address on there doesn't work. Contact me privately for an email address that does work.

Cheers

As Stan Cook’s gunmakers index is mentioned in this thread it seems appropriate to provide an update.

Stan Cook passed away in January 2021.  His research material and databases are now with me, initially for storage, but with a medium to long term aim of publishing in some form, hopefully freely accessible. No guarantees on timeframe.  I am doing some occasional very limited lookups when time permits, but not regularly.
