Hi danieloftyne,

As you are possibly aware no birth or death record in scotlandspeople website for Agnes Jane Stewart, around 1884 in Haddington. Do you have a name for her mother?

Tom Buchanan

Hi I have since found her born in newcastle upon tyne in 1886 to William Stewart and Elizabeth Henderson now I'm looking for william Stewart who was definitely born in Scotland to John and Janet but not sure when .He married  Elizabeth in Newcastle-upon-Tyne  in 1884 if that helps and I might be mistaken but he could have been born in Edinburgh

There are 1091 births of William Stewarts in Scotland between 1855 and 1870, so you need some more information if you want to pin down your particular one.

First, what does his marriage certificate say his father's occupation was? And does it give his age?

Next, have you found him in a census in 1891/1901/1911/1921, and if so does any of them say where in Scotland he was born? What age did he say he was in each census?

There is a record of a marriage of John Stewart to Janet Leishman in Edinburgh in 1845. This couple did have a son named William, born 20 March 1863 in Haddington, East Lothian.

All the relevant records are online at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Looks like the whole of the Stewart family had moved to Newcastle by the time of the 1871 census:

Thomas Aldridge 26 chair maker b. High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire
Janett Aldridge 22
Thomas Aldridge 1 b. Newcastle
John Stewart 48 Father-in-law coach painter
Jennet Stewart 42
John Stewart 22
Robert Stewart 18
Thomas Stewart 14 b. S. Shields Durham
Charles Stewart 16
Alice Stewart 10 www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYRS-3FN
William Stewart 7
Louisa Stewart 3 months

All the Stewarts, with the exception of baby Louisa and son Thomas, are showing as in Scotland.
Louisa's birth reg on the GRO index:

STEWART, LOUISA        LIESHMAN
GRO Reference: 1871  M Quarter in NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE  Volume 10B  Page 97

I think Louisa died in 1877.

Hi Monica thanks for the info .I have since posting found some of this info, now I'm trying to track down the ones born in Scotland  but I'm having very little luck in finding Janet Stewart jnr who became Aldridge also John, Robert, Charles. I don't know if they were registered at all or they weren't born where they said, and I can't for the life of me find Janet senior in dunfermline nor John stewart senior maybe I'm looking in the wrong place it's a mystery.

Father John not in the household for 1861, but these are the rest of the family:

Janet Stewart 33 b. Dunfermline, Fife
John Stewart 13 b. Glasgow
Janet Stewart 11 b. Perth, Perthshire
Robert Stewart 9 b. Perth, Perthshire
Charles Stewart 7 b. Haddington
Thomas Stewart 4 b. Haddington (we know he was born in Durham)
Alice Stewart 7 Months b. Haddington

Address: Nungate, Haddington

Added: John looks to be working in Glasgow and lodging there at the time of the 1861 census.

Official registration started in 1855, later than in England & Wales. The post 1855 births in Scotland will be on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk I can see a couple of entries in the index on Family Search:

Alice which is posted above www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYRS-3FN

And William, which Forfarian mentioned earlier www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYBP-ZFN

I can't easily see any entries for the children's christenings on the Old Parish Registers on SP though.

1851 entry, not long after their marriage:

John Stewart 29 coach painter b. Dundee, forfarsh
Janet Stewart 23 b. Dunfermline, fifesh
John Stewart 4 b. Edinburgh
Janet Stewart 2 b. Edinburgh
Hendry Leishman 18 lodger, weaver b. Dunfermline, Fife (brother to Janet?)

Address: James? Perth

Possible entry for Janet?

Janet Lieshman
Birth 13 Jan 1827 Dunfermline, Fife
Parents Robert Lieshman and Janet Jack

A good possibility for Janet in 1841 with her family, including a younger Henry:

Robert Leishman 47 J Flaxdresser b. Scotland
Janet Leishman 44 b. Scotland
Robert Leishman 19
Henry Leishman 8
Mary Leishman 21
Janet Leishman 14

Address: Spittal, Dunfermline

If you look for parents in the 1851 census, you should hopefully establish where in Scotland they were born as they show as born outside of the county in 1841.

Between 1820-25, there are three births or christenings showing in Dundee for a John Stewart (searching as St*rt for variants):

1821 - parents GEO. STEWART/MAY BAXTER
1822 - parents JOHN STEWART/JANET STEWART
1822 - parents CHAS. STEWART/AGNES EDWARD

No certainty though that his birth or christening was recorded in the OPRs or at all. Remember also that over the years many registers have been lost or destroyed. It is stated that only about a third of BMD events were recorded pre 1855 for all sorts of reasons.

Ah thank you ever so much for all your help I shall add all this info to my tree you are correct with Robert leishman as I have the marriages record of John stewart and Janet leishman and it states her father was a flax dresser unfortunately it doesn't give the grooms father's name oh well I can't have it all my own way I suppose😊
