Title: Death Dolgelly or Dolgelley, Merionethshire
Post by: chris0001 on Sunday 27 February 22 14:42 GMT (UK)
My wife's relative: Margaret, formally Crawford,  Barrow 1828–1855

Husband Hugh Barrow 1816 1860

Birth 1828 • Dublin, Ireland

Death 1855 • Dolgelly, Wales, United Kingdom

Information past down the generations suggest she died in Dolgelly but I cannot find a record of her death anywhere on Ancestry.

Any help appreciated.

Using GRO, there is no death for Margeret Burrow aged c27?
1855 +/- 2 years shows 8 deaths country wide.
5 aged 0 or 1; then 1 at 54, 1 at 55, and 1 at 65.

Hugh was appointed Garrison Quarter Master Sergeant in Gibraltar 2 Oct 1860. His pension record shows his death as 10 November 1873.

Have you looked in Gibraltar for Margaret's death?

I managed to get hold of Hughs Military record a couple of days back. My wife's parents managed to find his grave when visiting Gib many moons ago, to the best of our knowledge there was not a reference to his wife.

I have not managed to find an online source for Gibraltar deaths, suggestions appreciated.

Many thanks for all your suggestions and warm welcome.

My wife's parents visited Gib many moons ago and found Hugh's grave, but to the best of our knowledge, Margaret was not mentioned.

Tried finding a source for deaths there, as Hugh dies there in 1873 but failed, any suggestion appreciated.

Worth noting, Margaret's record in the 1851 census states she was born in Dublin, also cannot find any confirmation for that, she is somewhat elusive.

FamilySearch has marriages & baptisms for Gibraltar. Civil registration of deaths started in 1869 -contact information on link.

ref for Hugh's death reg

Nothing for Margaret.

I wonder if Margaret was from an army family which could explain birth in Dublin & marriage in Barbados.

Many thanks for the links

Managed to find file card for Hugh Barrow's death in 1873 mind the year is correct, but the age is not based on birth in 1816. States age 60 at death, maybe a clerical error. Have approached LDS via their on-line request page for any further details, apparently they have, we will see.

A relation from many years ago thought that Hugh married above his station, based on that the marriage record we have for them could mean that Margaret's parents were on Barbados as well and the father being in the same regiment. Speculation on my part. Shame, the marriage document does not include details of parents as well as just the witness.

Margaret's death, I have only managed to find one Margaret Barrow death for 1855 and that was in Liverpool, possibly what has been passed down the generations is wrong about Dongelly, mother-in-law did not get much wrong.

I very much appreciate the work you have done in supporting me in my search.

Looking for the couple who were witnesses at the marriage, likely couple in the same barracks as the Barrows in 1851 and Ellen was born in Ireland

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGPL-J13

By 1861, William has left the army and is a quartermaster sergeant in Brecon

William died 3 March 1871. 1871 census Ellen still in Brecon with niece Mary Kearney born Ireland.

Do you know where the sons grew up?

Interesting to get background on the witnesses.

Hugh and Margarets sons born:
John Nova Scotia
William Portsmouth
Hugh Barbados
The daughter Margaret died in her first year in Wanelltyd 1854.

Would be great to find Margaret Crawford parents and what her background was.

Apologies, reopening my original thread

A relative has now informed me that

Marriage
03 Apr 1847 • Saint Michael, Barbados, Caribbean
Between Hugh Barrow and Margaret Crawford
(1828–1855)

Margaret was apparently the Colonels daughter. Is there any way of finding his details?
He is not mentioned on the record of marriage.

the church record for the marriage on FamilySearch that I gave you earlier is all you can get on the marriage as it is before the date for civil registration of marriages on Barbados. It is not in the Army marriages index.

I haven't found a Colonel Crawford in the 7th Regt of Foot as yet.

I used the Royal Welsh Fusiliers Museum records request a couple of years ago.   Had a great response although I was looking for a 20th century record.   They were extremely helpful

I would give them a ring first if you can and see if its worth it.
