Barbara Greenan nee Clark died on 21st September 1969 at Deaconess Hospital, Edinburgh. Widow of James Greenan, Masons Labourer.
Her death was registered by her grandaughter - signature looks like C. Arnott.
I have downloaded a copy of her Death Certificate.
Will see if I can trace who C. Arnott's parents were.
Regards,
Dorrie
-
I now have the information on who the C. Arnott was. Although it may not be of much help unfortunately.
The 1st Child listed on the WW1 Pension Record for James Greenan's was Isabella.
Isabella was not James' child she was born to his wife Barbara Clark in 1901 and was illigitimate. There is an RCE in 1902 naming her father as a Hugh Cassiday. James and Barbara married in 1906.
On the 1911 Census she is listed as Isabella Greenan so obviously James accepted her along with his own children. They are living at Adelphi Place, Portobello, Edinburgh.
Isabella married a James McKinsley on 16/7/1920 under the name of Isabella Cassiday Clark. No father is listed but her mother is given as Barbara Clark subsequently married to James Greenan (Deceased.) Isabella died in 1972.
One of their children was Catherine McKinsley born in 1927 and she married an Alexander Arnott in 1946. She died in 1988. This is the grandaughter who registered Barbara Clark/Greenan's death in 1969.

Hi Dorrie,
Thank you for the research you have carried out re the Greenan family.
Sadly, because Isabella was Barbara's child before her marriage to James Greenan, she would not be considered to be a near enough relative for CWGC purposes. :-\
I have a relative from the Terence Greenan line who has just contacted me but I'm not sure this line will be nearer enough - it comes from a Isabella Peters line by marriage. :-\
Thank you once again
Regards
Sandra
-
Hi Sandra,
Yes, that is any descendants of Isabella out of the picture. Which leaves us with 4 children to pursue. I have been looking at them and will post my findings. The unfortunate thing is, as you will already be aware of, is a follows - Not available online - Births less than 100 years, Marriages less than 75 years and Deaths less than 50 years.
The next Child of James Greenan is James Greenan born 3/2/1907. He married Annie Cairns on 4/4/1936 and died on 17/12/1950 at 24 Pipe Street, Portobello, Edinburgh. His death was registered by his widow Annie. Annie died in 1998 so no way of knowing who registered her death. There are a number of possible children of this marriage in the SP Index but no way of knowing who they were.
Dorrie

Very good findings. Thank you for your help.
Sorry a little tied up at mo but believe there was a son born 3 Feb 1937 Portobella Edinburgh (same name as father) Annie may have been Annie Banks Cairns.
Thank You

Gosh you have been busy Sandra. All that information on James's siblings.
Going back to James Greenan and Barbara Clark's children - The next one I looked at was Rosann Sherlock Greenan.
She was born on 29/12/1908 at Armadale, West Lothian. Armadale connects with your reply #32.
She married John Allan Scott on 30/12/1935 at Portobello, Edinburgh. One of the witnesses was Barbara Greenan (Her sister I assume)
She died in 1991 m.m.s. given as Clark - Registration district Canongate & Portobello. Her husband died in 1986.
Again neither death viewable online.

Thanks again Dorrie for your continued help on this one. We are getting warmer.

Next child of James Greenan and Barbara Clark -
Annie Greenan born on 5/1/1911 - Portobello, Edinburgh.
She married Thomas Thomson Allison on 26/2/1932 at Musselburgh, Midlothian. There is an RCE for their divorce on 25/7/1950.
Thomas Thomson Allison died on 21/9/1955 and his death was registered by his brother Samuel Allison.
There are a couple of Allison births in the SP Index which could possibly be children of Annie & Thomas but not certain as they cannot be viewed online.
For the life of me I cannot find a death for Annie in Scotland using all the variations available but will keep looking.

Last Child of James Greenan and Barbara Clark -
Barbara Greenan born on 14/1/1915 - Portobello, Edinburgh.
She married Patrick Duffin 28/1/1937 - Edinburgh. There is an RCE for their divorce on 27/3/1951.
There is an outgoing passenger list for Barbara Duffin aged 39 (date of birth confirms) going to Canada on 16/6/1954, her address is given as 31 Dublin Street, Edinburgh.
She must have returned to Scotland at some point as there is another passenger list for her going to Canada on 13/9/1960 with her permanent residence given as 2883 Duffern Street, Toronto.
The Canadian 1963 Census lists her as a waitress living at 344 Broadview Avenue, Toronto.
Dorrie
-
I have been looking for any children of Barbara Greenan and Patrick Duffin and have found 1 girl for definite.
She was born on 1/6/1937 and went to Canada on 20/4/1955. Her home address is listed on the Pasenger List as 31 Dublin Street, Edinburgh. The same as her mother's in 1954. I will not name her as she may still be alive.
No further Canadian or Scottish Records for either of them that I can find.

I have now looked at Roseanne Greenan - sister of James Greenan and have found the following -
Roseanne Greenan was born 2/5/1890 - parents check out as James Greenan & Roseanne Sherlock - they married on 14/5/1876 Parish of Donagh, County Monaghan.
Roseanne Greenan married Henry Viner Turner on 2/10/1912 and died on 27/11/1968. Her usual place of residence was 106 Restalrig Road South, Edinburgh. From the Edinburgh Electoral Register they were at this address for a number of years. Her death was registered by her son Robert Turner - address 24 Findlay Avenue, Edinburgh. Around 5 minutes walk from his parents. Roseanne's parents check out. Henry Turner died on 1/9/1952 and death registered by the same son Robert. Addresses same as above.
I know this area of Edinburgh well as I lived there for 25 years in the 1960/1990's.
Now to try and trace the son Robert and another one named Henry.
Dorrie
-
Robert Turner son of Roseanne Greenan and Henry Viner Turner -
Born on 6/11/1912 at Kings Road, Portobello, Edinburgh.
He married Marjory W. Holloway on 3/6/1939. His address is given as 106 Restalrig Road South, Edinburgh and one of the witnesses was a Henry V. Turner of the same address - his brother.
Robert died in 2003 and Marjory in 1997 according to the SP Index. Mother's mms checks out.
I may have found a son of this marriage born in 1940 but as he is still living I will not post his name here but will P.M. Sandra with my findings.
Dorrie
-
Henry Viner Turner second son of Roseanne Greenan and Henry Viner Turner obviously named after his father -
Born on 17/11/1916 at 106 Restalrig Road South, Edinburgh.
He married Anna W. McIntyre in 1947according to SP Index.
Henry died in 2000 and Anna in 2006. Mms checks out.
I have found a son of this marriage born in 1955 but as he is still living I will not post his name here but will PM Sandra with my findings.
There are another two sons born to Roseanne Greenan and Henry Viner Turner - as follows
James Fraser Turner born 1/6/1921 at 106 Restalrig Road South and Alexander Turner born in 1922. Both are listed in the Edinburgh Electoral Registers (1964 last one available) as living at 106 Restalrig Road South, Edinburgh. No marriage for either of them.
James died in 1989 and Alexander in 1994 according to the SP Index and mms checks out.

I may have found a grandaughter of James Greenan and Barbara Clark living in Edinburgh. She is the daughter of Rosann Greenan and John Allan Scott and was born around 1943. Her middle names are Clark and Greenan so hopefully this is her. I found a marriage for this lady in 1965.
Searching the Edinburgh Electoral Registers I have what I think is a current address for her and a telephone number from BT.
I will try to contact her and let you know the outcome.
Dorrie
-
Success I have just spoken to the lady and she has confirmed that she is indeed a grandaughter of James Greenan. She is quite willing to be contacted by CWGC regarding their enquiry.
I will pm Sandra with her details.
