My 5xGr-Grandfather was Timothy ETHERIDGE. He married Elizabeth GREENWAY 23 Feb 1716 in Arlingham, GLS. Their children were born in Saul/Fretherne/Whitminster (all within 2-3 miles of one another and within 2-5 miles of Arlingham). Although I have been searching for many years, I have been unable to find any record of Timothy prior to his marriage, anywhere. He would likely have been born in the late 1600s
Recently I found that I have a DNA match to someone descended from Thomas ETHERIDGE and Elizabeth GRIFFIN, married in Sandhurst 1677. They had at least 9 children in Maisemore, GLS between 1679 and 1694.
I know I'm grasping at straws but I'm wondering if Timothy could have been baptised with a different name as one of their children. Is there any way to confirm something like this? Or could he have been their son but the record is a bit difficult to read?
Does anyone have access to Maisemore parish registers in person? Or...
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks. Karen Stevens (nee Davies)

According to this, they are available at Ancestry.

Have you searched for a will of this 'Thomas Etheridge' to see who he names as his children?
In fact it would be a good idea to look for any Etheridge wills that might mention your family.
Grandparents, bachelor uncles and spinster aunts were also good at leaving bequests to their grandchildren or nephews and nieces.
It looks as if Gloucestershire wills are on ancestry, and I don't have a subscription.
IT doesn't appear to be at the PCC as you can search those on The National Archives site.
There is this about a Thomas Etheridge at 'Apperley', which is only a few miles from Maisemore.

Somebody has been researching the Etheridges at Maisemore before - looks like back in the 1970s.
These records are held at Gloucestershire Archives. Have you searched their catalogue to see what records there are for Etheridges?

There is this on TNA.
Is this your Timothy?

If you don't have an ancestry sub, familysearch have the films for Maisemore. You can view them at home for free as long as you're signed in.
The parish registers are still not digitised, but the BTs are.
Go to 'catalog', and put in the name Maisemore.
A search on the BTs film does indeed throw up some children for Thomas and Elizabeth.
Nothing that looks like it could be a mistranscription of 'Timothy', but you never know.
It could also be that the name 'Etheridge' has been mistranscribed.
It may also have been that he was never baptised for some reason, in which case you'd have to look for other ways to find him such as in my first post.
The film of the BTs may also have pages missing, or bits of pages torn, burnt, eaten by insects etc.
You could search each frame of the film to see if you could find him.

Thank you, Pauline J, I shall give it a whirl.

Dear goldie61,
I truly appreciate all of your suggestions. You've given a great deal of time to my query!
The answer to the final question on your first response - YES! I'm going to get a quote for a copy of the record. I'm going to search for wills at GRO and will comb the registers for Maisemore myself, using your suggestion on Family Search and will also give it a go on Ancestry.
Lots to go on now.
Again, many thanks!
Karen

There are very useful records of the Forest of Dean website. Free, just have to register.
Gloucestershire Marriage Allegations 1747-1737 and Marriage Bonds 1730-1723 is the heading, although there are much earlier ones.
Two Etheridg ( without the e)
Matthew 1685 at Deerhurst
Elizabeth 1691 at Sandhurst
There are 54 Etheridge records, some as early as 1638 …. Different locations

Thank you, both, Tilly and Capetown! I've not heard of Forest-of-Dean.net but will give it a go!
Many thanks!!

? Just looking at the baptisms on the Forest of Dean Site, ie looking for family names.
Elizabeth 1718 @ Saul
William 1722 @ Saul
John 1726 @ Saul
Martha 1727 @ Fretherne
Mary 1729 @ Saul***
James ETHERIDG 1733 @ Whitminster
William 1734 @ Whitminster
Nathaniel 1740 @ Saul
On the records for the baptism of Mary 1729….
It states parents Timothy and Elizabeth (mother’s surname: PULLUM)
Memoranda : illegitimate dau
There are some Elizabeth Pullen/PAWLIN/POOLEN around that time. Always best to use the soundex for Surnames when searching.

There is in the Forest of Dean records, a burial at Saul 5 June 1728
For Elizabeth Etheridge, wife of Timothy.
So, the baptisms of the children have 2 mothers both Elizabeth.

Thank you, Capetown,
It appears, then, that Elizabeth Greenway died shortly after the birth of Martha and Timothy took up with Elizabeth Pullum being a widower and having small children. They then had 4 more children.
I tried to join the Forest of Dean records site but it's not working at present. Can't find a marriage for E Pullum and T Etheridge so maybe they just co-habituated. Anyway, lots of work to do.
Thank you so much for your help!
