Title: Thomas Mahon born 1786/1789 Carlow
Post by: Arnside98 on Monday 25 April 22 09:30 BST (UK)
Looking for any information on Thomas’ siblings or parents. I believe he was born in Carlow in 1786 or 1789 (there are some discrepancies in his north year). He joined the army in 1804 at the Carlow Barracks and was a private in the 12th light dragoon’s. He married Susanna Harris in 1815 and had 9 children. Thomas left the army in 1827 and moved to London. I have details of his life from when he entered the army until his death but can’t trace his birth or his family. Can anyone help or does anyone also have Mahon family from Carlow? Thanks

You mean his birth year.
Have you found him on census returns?
Have you looked for Mahon in "Surname Interests" and added yours?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, sorry “birth” year. I missed the typo.
I haven’t found any records of him in Ireland in the late 1700s. He signed up to the army in Carlow in 1805. I have a lot of records from then onwards. It appears he was born in Carlow.

I will add my details to the surname list. Thanks heaps for that suggestion

Do you know his religious denomination? The only record predating his army enlistment would be a baptism register, if it exists.

I think Anglican. He was married in a Church of England Church in England and his children were christened and married in Church of England Churches in London.
Unless converted from Catholicism after joining the army.

All marriages in England 1754-1836 had to be C. of E. except for Quakers and Jews.
Catholics were allowed to join the British Army shortly before Thomas Mahon's birth (1778 Relief Act).
Keep an open mind about his religion.

Thanks for that information. I didn’t know the dates for those laws. He was listed as a labourer on army documents. Yes, I have an open mind about his religion. There are other Mahon’s in Carlow but I haven’t found a link to my ancestor.

There are not too many registers for Thomas birth if a Catholic in Carlow. On irishgenealogy.ie, there are births for Thomas Mahon in both Catholic and Protestant registers but none in Carlow. Could county Dublin be a possibility? Kim

Do you know if it was Carlow town or just County Carlow?
Did he live long enough to be on a census?

Thank you for your replies. On his army discharge papers, it says that he was born in the parish of Carlow, in the town of Carlow, County of Carlow and enlisted in the same. However, I have an open mind as to whether this is true. Yes, Thomas was in 1841 census in London with his wife and children. I believe he was Protestant because his son (my ancestor) was.

Modified to add: in the 1841 census he just states that he was born in Ireland.

It's likely that he enlisted close to home.
Did he survive until 1851 census when he would have been able to put a more specific birthplace than Ireland?

Yes, he died in 1867 but we haven’t found him in the 51 or 61 census. There are many spelling errors though. He is in the electoral roll as Thomas Main (St George Hanover Square) but that obviously doesn’t detail where he is from.
