Title: Joyce and Derek WRIGHT
Post by: brigidmac on Thursday 02 June 22 23:17 BST (UK)
Joyce 1931-2020 WOOLNOUGH
+ Derek WRIGHT 1930 Bolton.lancs  d .2022

This amazing couple ran A BARNADOS CHILDREN S home from the 1950s
They lived in Chatham Kent but married in Blackpool

I'm going to try and find more about the home and whether there are any articles about the couple or the cared for children

Derek Wright son of Mary Elizabeth CORNTHWAITE  1902 came from a recomposed family + didn't know his birth father  .
I was pleased to find that he came from a family that had fostered relatives and non blood relatives for several generations
and that some of the research into his relatives was from adoptees who have researched their non biological family assiduously.

I'm sure Joyce's story will be just as interesting the couple had one daughter Lyn who was an adopter but unfortunately passed away in her 50s

parents Elizabet CORNTHWAITE m Samuel WRIGHT Cameron St Astley Bridge Bolton Lancs.

Derek was first born child

Mary + Sam had bicycle accident ,
as a result of which Sam became ill and  died when Derek was  only 2& their daughter 4 mths

His grandma Emma CORNTHWAITE nee ROBERTS  from Mold Flintshire  known as Moma practically raised  the children as mother Mary had to work .

Part 2 #copiecd and pasted from his younger sisters email

" ...homes  including Market Harborough, after which they went on to run as heads at
a number of homes in Lancashire.

In 1971 Derek got a job as a manager in
the West Midlands office of Dr Barnado's homes. He was responsible for
all the homes in a huge area encompassing the Midlands, Leicestershire,
Derbyshire, Shropshire, etc

He didn't actually run a home for the
organisation but grew into senior management. When he retired at 56
(nice and early) he then went on to lecture on child care and The Child Act at a college in Worcestershire, ending his career when he was just turned 60.

Joyce was working in clerical work and managed a shop in
Stourbridge market. They were wonderful house parents and were very
highly regarded.

Are you looking for any specific information regarding this couple?

Is this your family Brigid? If not, do you have permission from the family to post details about, and photos of, them on this public forum? They are both very recently deceased. I’m afraid I wouldn’t be happy if these were my parents.  :-\

 ONLY child deceased .

(Aus half sister has DNA tested + a first cousin )

derek is the 93 year old mentioned in reply  4 of the link supplied

They  + Eden/ Jones  branch( mr T )are mums second cousins

Id been  helping Derek for about 2 years  via his grandaughter to know more about his origins .

Descendant s of  Mary Cornthwaite- Wright Brown s later marriage  including their  new dna have been sent links to this topic

There are no other relatives from his side .

I d like  to know about the homes they ran in the late 1950s particularly
And if there was a mother baby unit attached to any of them

He's more eminent than I thought so there must be news articles from his promotions etc.

The DNA match with father unknown hopes  to see more photos of his  cousins uncles and aunts for family resemblance

Since last night they are  all now in contact via email . Facebook and future zooms

There's another branch of even closer matches that we are trying to contact

will ask  moderator to remove any sentences   any FAMILY member object to.

 Thanks for pm. Tomkin

Btw japeflakes I  think black and white was a good idea .

I chose sepia for history film clips often ...have my own semi pro film director !

Joyce is related by marriage so I don't have her family on my tree but I'd love  to know more about her work and achievements too .

I wish I'd known them both .

Some more details from Australia

- Joyce was from Chatham, Kent, born 15 June 1931. She had one
brother, Brian, who is now deceased and was younger than Joyce. Their
surname was Woolnough. Mother: May, father: Percy. Both parents were
from huge families of 13 children!
The family treewas sent to Joyce when she inherited from a cousin who died without family so Joyce and the other cousins shared his estate. The solicitor sent the family tree to joyce .grandaughter may have it

mother's first husband, died in 1932 when Derek was 2 and B 4 months old.

Derek and Joyce married in Chatham, Kent where Joyce came from and Derek
was in the Royal Navy base there - 1951.

Lynn was 63 when she died, poor lamb."

Brigid, this is the Photo board. You’ve had your photo restored. I’m not sure that it’s appropriate, necessary, or of interest, to continue to post personal identifiable details about this family on this public forum.

From this stickied thread:
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=142443.msg744449#msg744449

Quote from Berlin Bob:
Firstly, anything posted on the internet is in the public domain.  Anybody can see this information - including unscrupulous types.  To protect people and their identities we do not encourage the posting of information about people who are or maybe still living.
Even with permission from the subject of a post we would seriously advise against giving too much information as to betray their identity.

The Rootschat moderators reserve the right to delete or edit posts that we believe may contain information that could be misused to the detriment of the subject.

Secondly, if information is given about living people or of the recently deceased and this is found by them or their close relatives there is a risk of upset and trauma.
So please be prudent in the information you post
.

I don’t wish to spoil your fun, but you might like to consider the above.

Have you thought about doing a website or blog along the lines of https://chiddicksfamilytree.com/? It would still be advisable/essential to get permission from all family members prior to doing so.

Not sure if you are doing the right thing here …..  :-\

Deleted no point in commenting to an individual who is not family and not helping.
My wording may have sounded sarcastic ..sorry

Title: Re: Joyce and Derek WRIGHT
Post by: brigidmac on Monday 06 June 22 08:59 BST (UK)
I was a bit panicked by some comments
Have staved off a panic attack and would like to explain a miscommunication

I was told Derek didn't know his father and must have jumped to conclusion or mis understood wording

I thought that he didn't know who is father was which would have been a challenging task without DNA.

But he didn't KNOW his father  because he was 2 when he died .

I enjoyed linking Derek to my great grandfather s sister Dorcas Jones and we knew lots about her history through mums cousin Olive whose mother died soon after birth OLIVE  RIP brought up by grandparents and researched trees ...and organised cousin parties from 1980- 2000...welcoming new half steps and spouses

Which region should this topic be on ?
Link to Welsh history

Family lore + Olives research

: 15 year old Dorcas ran away with farmhand was disowned by father had no children for 10 years then 10 children in quick succession

Moved to the 'England' board as requested as there seem to be multiple locations involved.

Ruskie not sure you are doing right thing posting on thread when it could be in pm 😜

Read reply 12 + 14

I've  asked moderator to transfer to a local board

The family want to know more and find more pics .

Can’t you do that via private email contact?

Do not understand the relevance of advising me to read replies 12 and 14. I have read them. :)

I’m bowing out now as I feel I’m wasting my time and going round in circles.

PS. What I’ve said is not private so I didn’t feel the need to say it via PM.

*amendments made after a request by the OP (which may change relevance of replies which follow).

Thanks daawnish

Rudkie The photo board is also for dating photos and investigating them .

In future if people search Derek OR Joyce WRIGHT they will find this topic .

Dereks daughter agrees that above comments are   making assumptions
& Spoil topic
when we join dots with the other DNA matches .
* Redacted topic too long

" I've  now asked moderator to transfer to DNA forum

3)We don't have contact for one set of relatives yet so can't use email or other

4)"you haven’t asked for help with anything "

I DID ASK had to word diplomatically because involves living person nor n between 1955 and 1965
Some reading between lines is required

How many times did I post this message !
No wonder posts or PM's sound incoherent

But I am also having problems seeing and focussing and rushing to do other things

The photo board is also for dating photos .

In future if people search Derek and Joyce they will find this topic . But I think the family will understand and be tolerant of grammar spelling or non linear thought .

If anyone has any suggestions for improved wording do let me know in pm so the post doesn't become to long .

We Don't have contact for one set of relatives yet

"you haven’t asked for help with anything "
I  asked about children's homes

and had to word diplomatically because involves living person nor n between 1955 and 1965

Some reading between lines is requiired

I have requested transfer to DNA board as that links more to the other underlying queries

ruskies & my  definition of what rootschat is for ...differs
& I do not describe them as " this poor family "

Rootschat has many purposes and some of us usr certain. Forumd more than others  this particular story is a combination of tree building finding in depth details if a couple's life sharing photos and contacting an identified cousin of Derek and his family

Am I being oversensitive.?.i am sad that the cousin was identified before Derek's death but we have been unable to contact any of them.

It think it's disrespectful to have a technical ethical discussion on derek and joyces topic . So will delete or shorten this post tomorrow .

If I'm expressing myself badly sometimes lack of punctuation change sense .hard to see on mobile phone

I have visual problems and technophobia & appreciate everyone's patience

I am overcoming healtn problems to become  a time travel detective  + must be doing something right because have had a legacy towards my costs to help other NPE descendants.

I will delete this post when I have reassurance that it is not me that 'does not get it " or a gentler clearer personal explanation of what is wrong  none of us (Derek's relatives) want to read long posts for diverse reasons which I won't reveal and shouldnt have to justify

The family facetime reunion did not occur due to my illness  but the ones who know each other but are distant and the new relative can friend each other on Facebook and have email and phone contact

I look forward to calling Australia..putting a voice to a face is special .

The JONES in DUBAI branch with grandad ( Derek's cousin) in UK will eventually get notification from Ancestry . Facebook or word of mouth .and they will have a ready made tree ! The grandaughters are very lucky ...to have exciting female relatives descending from Dorcas JONES 1847 who ran off with James ROBERTS.+ Had 15 children

Another distant  DNA match lives in llanorman and has checked graveyard details I have for Abiah Roger JONES & is now investigating their mother Rebecca THOMAS 1825

Rebecca  is at the top of my tree and likely where the connection is from.with these Welsh names it's really slow going verifying identity .
