I have her marrying Harpley Cook in 1825 in Danby and appearing in censuses up until 1881 but I'm struggling to find any record of her birth.
Any help gratefully received.
TIA,
Richard

John,
Where are you seeing that record? Are there any later records for her mother marrying or dieing in the same area? I ca't find anything on Ancestry or FamilySearch.

I note that when Harpley and Alice were married the two witnesses were a Ralph BRECKON and a Wm RUDDUCK. The latter witnessed most marriages and so is probably not connected.
The Ralph BRECKON might be the one born in Westerdale in 1806. He is a very distant cousin to me but other than his baptism I have no firm data. My notes for him just say -
“Tree on Ancestry (Hart family tree by josephinehart43) has him getting married 11 Apr 1840 to a Almira CALVERT in Canada. It also said he married a Lydia SMITH (1814 - 1839) in 1835 but place unknown and no source.”
If it is right that Alice is the illegitimate daughter of a Hannah HOLT then this might be the baptism of Hannah -
Upleatham 1783 - Hannah, daughter of Elizabeth HOLT Nov 9th.
Apart from the baptism of Alice in Upleatham in 1809 there is also this -
Mary HOLT 20 July 1806, mother Hannah HOLT.
Mary HOLT may have married George OUSTON in Whitby 17 Dec 1823. However it seems George was a Banker, the marriage was by licence and there were five people called HOLT who were witnesses. Looks like George died in 1838 and in 1841 Mary was age 40+ so a different Mary HOLT.

Spelk,
Thanks for the info. I agree that *if* Hannah is Alice's mother then Mary was probably her sister... I think Mary's marriage to George Ouston is probably wrong as there are trees on Ancestry showing that Mary Holt as being born in Whitby in 1796 which seems a lot more likely.
