Title: Croped Hedge
Post by: Hill on Friday 16 September 22 15:44 BST (UK)
Hi

I have a birth of Ethel Knowlson born 12th June 1855.

It gives the place of birth as Croped Hedge, Linton, Hereford.

I can't find any details about Croped Hedge. Is it a place or a house or ....?

Ethel was illegitimate so it could well be a home. Can anyone help?

Stewart

There are a few census entries in 1841, 1851 and 1901 for people living at "Cropt Hedge" in the Linton/Bromyard area. In the Bringsty Common area.

William Pearce and family in 1841 and 1851; Sarah Orgee and brother Richard Page in 1901

If it is of any help, this is the Enumerator's walk for 1851.

This house on Bringsty Common was about a mile from where we live.   It was located to the east of the former school shown on this map with two buildings https://maps.nls.uk/view/101569467#zoom=5&lat=5848&lon=4578&layers=BT

My OH drew the maps for a book on the area - Bromyard - Minster Manor and Town by Phylis Williams which includes a map showing the property and I think some detials.   I will look for the book

Added - Extract of the book dated 1987 - Cropped Hedge is another property that no longer stands and that bore the more likely name of Croft Hedges in 1851.  The house cab still be vaguely remembered by older Bringsty (Common) inhabitants and the stone platforms of the buildings are obvious.  Samuel Page of the Orchards Farm was the owner and William Pierce, a labourer, his tenant in 1842. "   There is more about later occupants of the property but no mention of any Knowlsons

Mary Jane Knowlson was a waitress from Devonport (Plymouth) the daughter of a Royal Navy Sea Captain. I'm guessing that because the child was illegitimate the birth took place away from home. Certainly, MJK was in Devon in 1851 and again in 1861 however the child, Ethel born in 1855, never went to her mother's home but was cared for by a family in Newton Abbot.

There appears to be no family connections with Herefordshire as far as I can tell.

Is that birth record for 1885 rather than 1855??

Hi All

Yes it is Ethel Knowlson Sep 1885 Bromyard 6a 529. You will see that on the top of the certificate they have typed 1855! It should be 1885 as per the entry on the certificate. I had already seen this but forgotten when I typed up this query.
