Title: Stay safe board
Post by: sonofthom on Thursday 22 September 22 12:19 BST (UK)
The general blurb for this board states “ Remember: Stay at home. Keep social distancing. Wash your hands with soap and hot water for 20 seconds.

Surely it is time to move on?

I think most people have “moved on”, yet by starting this thread it seems that you may not have done so.

If you are suggesting that the board be removed or the advice you cited be changed, this would require some time and effort by the site owners who have jobs and lives outside of rootschat.

There’s no harm leaving the board and the blurb as they are, people do not have to read it or contribute. Doesn’t matter if it’s there or not does it?  :-\

Not sure why you think "it is time to move on" - Covid is still around and new cases are being declared .  OK not to the extent as in the past, but it hasn't gone away, and precautions are still needed.

I agree with you Ruskie  :)

What would we do if the board was removed as although I do not contribute to it I always read the diary thread. Anyway, most of those rules are still relevant if you want to stay Covid free and you are out and about

I agree with Ruskie also  :)

Today I went to the chemist to pick up prescriptions ordered online last week (the surgery implemented this during or perhaps before first lockdown) and wore a mask inside. On the way from the car park to the chemist the library happened to be open- with a sign outside about social distancing, etc. Today I also booked our latest covid jabs. Doesn't seem like it's gone away yet.

We each have to do what we  feel comfortable with and that is it as far as I am concerned

OP is referring to the lines of text at the top of the list of topics which reads

"This is a board for discussing the current situation that this world faces. Please consult medical advice relevant to your own country. Remember: Stay at home. Keep social distancing. Wash your hands with soap and hot water for 20 seconds"

Perhaps all that is required is that this text be updated, perhaps simply by editing the first part to read something like "the situation the world has been facing since early 2020, when the advice was ..."

According to a friend of mine, on another forum, hospital admissions, of those with a positive covid diagnosis, were up 16% in a week!

Mentioned by 2 NHS senior staff on the same forum.

Indeed. Covid is not "over".

I don't think we've seen the end of this virus yet.  We know it mutates and comes back with renewed vigor.

Perhaps sonofthom can enlighten us about what he meant by 'move on'.

If it's about the header itself, we all know that we don't have to stay home now so it doesn't matter if that piece of advice is out of date. As Ruskie said, people have other things to do than alter it for no good reason.

If it's a suggestion that the board is discontinued, there are still issues like the latest booster jab up for discussion. As for the diary thread, it's been a massive blessing for me and others and although I don't contribute to it as much now I still like to read it and see how people are getting on.

Roobarb, I have no issues whatsoever with the diary thread and I can clearly see its benefit. However I do take issue with being told that we should stay at home and keep social distancing, not least because this is at odds with the position of the UK Government that we have to live with Covid. As several people have stated the covid virus is here to stay and so we all have to accept that fact and get on with our lives.

It's just an out of date board header that underlined the situation at the time it was written, it's not an instruction from Tristan and Sarah! You do seem to be taking it rather seriously.....

Yes, covid is still out there, and yes we do have to live with the situation.  Perhaps we just need to apply common sense.  Whatever the government recommends I feel it is up to each of us to act according to our own situation.  If we were on a crowded bus, or in supermarket for example and felt a mask was appropriate then surely that is what we should do?  We are not only protecting ourselves but acting for the benefit of others around us who might have health issues.  Nobody wants this awful virus to mutate during the coming winter months and overwhelm our health service again.  We have to remember to stay safe!  Lecture over, don't want to upset anyone just wanted to add another point of view :)  Welly x

Thank you Maiden Stone.  I think the Stay safe board should remain as it is.  I had to bury my husband (married 54 years) during covid, just coming up to 2 years ago now.  Just six people around the grave, very hard to bare.  His only grandchild was aged 10 at the time and now has severe covid related OCD. If this board helps to inform people what is going on out there from first hand experience then that has to be a good thing.

I'm lost for words, what an absolutely dreadful two years you must have had. Losing your husband at any time must be awful but in the midst of a pandemic it makes everything so much worse, the lockdown and following restrictions made it impossible to grieve in the usual way with the support of loved ones.
There are so many children and young people who have suffered with mental health problems and your grand child is testament to how that is sadly continuing. My heart goes out to you.  :-*

Thoughts go out to you, Wellington.

Unfortunately there are others who do NOT believe that it exists.  I met someone at a garden centre a couple of years ago, and she did not believe that covid existed and was not prepared to take any precautions!  :-X :-X  Perhaps she and her family are still alive  :-\

I agree.

If you have an issue with it, don’t look at the board or the “blurb”. I’m sure Trystan and the others have plenty of more important things to do than spend time changing words which one person objects to.

We have moved on. A current thread is about autumn 2022 boosters.

I don’t contribute as often as I used to but I do read the thread every day…

At the time when Trystan first wrote the diary it was a life saver for most people who contributed to it and helped enormously knowing how others felt..and is still continuing to do so..

I agree that for a few words, which incidentally I’ve never read, at the beginning are irrelevant really..

Just reading the news app this evening they are talking about numbers on the increase and secondary school children going to be monitored more closely… so it’s not gone away and we are now entering into having a further vaccination..

Masks still worn in surgeries and other places too… caution still taken, shopping deliveries from supermarkets still happening …

I feel very fortunate that neither I or my OH have had covid… whilst others around us have… many of whom have got on aircraft to go on holiday… or cruise ships..

The, now, weekly thread still keeps us informed about how everyone’s coping, comparisons with symptoms of vaccinations etc etc..
No one is obligated to contribute so personally I don’t see that the wording matters and definitely the thread shouldn’t be removed.

Watching the Queen’s funeral & looking at the crowds - I immediately thought of the risks of spreading Covid.

The warnings we were given back in 2020 should always be in our minds so I endorse all the favourable comments for keeping the “Stay Safe” board

I had the same thought. Some people wore masks at the lying-in-state.

I am involved with a U3A in Victoria, Australia.  Recent advice from our group is that there is political, ie government, advice and medical advice.  They can be very different.  We are following the medical advice.

Having worked with politicians and medics at various times in my career, I know whose advice I'd take  :)

I'm not even sure about your choice.  I worked, for a number of years, at the Department of General Practice in Manchester.  Some of the things I saw and heard really beggared belief.  :o

It's definitely not over, no matter how much I wish it was.  We spent the past 2 shifts getting ever changing instructions from the bed manager re moving patients so that we can create a new "red ward".  Then there are those being admitted with post covid complications even though they may have had a relatively mild acute phase of the infection.

I'd like the board to stay and then those who wish to read and contribute can.  There are other boards on here that I don't read because the content holds no interest for me, I see no problem having a wide range of subjects for boards

Input to the Stay Safe board from pharma, Gadget and others with particular expertise has been valuable.
