Title: District Code use NSW BDM
Post by: Nova67 on Friday 14 October 22 01:43 BST (UK)
Has anyone noticed this?

I have noticed that a three number district code now appears on the later deaths indexed at NSW BDM. I have attached an example. I know there is a list of Early Church Codes but there does not seem to be any explanation for the district codes.

The question has been asked on other forums too. An answer given in relation to do the numbers relate to particular districts and is there a list:
"In short there is no list. I spoke to a transcription agent and she has asked BDM the same question. The answer was they would get back to her. She is still waiting. She believes those numbers are reference numbers for BDM themselves but also related to a district. So as yet no list and no answer."

Thank you, Maddy. I appreciate your reply.

I wondered if this had come up before. It seems very strange to add it without any explanation, especially given that people use it for family history and location is so useful.  I had also thought of asking a transcription agent. The numeric code is probably more for their convenience than ours, but the question will keep on coming up.  I thought of emailing them but decided I would likely get no response.  I suppose the core business is not old registrations.

It is very strange.
Victoria's indexes show the district of the death  registration right into the 1980's.
Plus MMS if known and other details, while NSW has a cut-off at end 1973 for revealing the district and slips into code at that point.

Admin at NSW BMD has in past years been reluctant with  the communication side of things and their disinclination to reveal the meaning of the codes is typical and unhelpful .

I have even seen this -

JOHNSON William Edward
Reg 17417/1976
DIED DARLINGHURST
Mother- 066
District- 001

Ironically, you cannot use the code in any of the boxes on the search. For instance where there the box for district at the bottom of the search page, putting a code in there does not work ::)

Bewildering really.!
Sue

ADDING
I do note that in the instance of the PDF being "readily available", the district is stated

I looked that up and got:

JOHNSON WILLIAM EDWARD2454/1976 WILLIAM EDWARD IVY HAZEL 001

ADDED too: JOHNSON WILLIAM EDWARD17417/1976 DIED DARLINGHURST 066 001

Now I see it!

Even odder.

Interesting that the fact of PDF availability reveals the district!

You can compare entries from Ryerson Index and NSW BDM and make a guess.  eg https://familyhistory.bdm.nsw.gov.au/lifelink/familyhistory/search - MARKHAM, HARRIETT LILIAN - NSW BDM DC 22627/1984 - F = ROBERT, M = HARRIETT LILIAN - 048
http://ryersonindex.net/search.php - MARKHAM, Harriet Lillian.  Death notice 01 OCT 1984.  Death 69 at Young, late of Hurstville. St George & Sutherland Leader 04 OCT 1984.
There are a lot of errors, mainly spelling, on the NSW BDM and I guess they get a bit precious because the information is supposed to be legally binding.  Neil

Thank you for that helpful suggestion.

Does anyone know what has happened with Roots Chat member majm who has not been online since 4 June 2022?

My aunt is with a family history group that has been compiling a list of District Codes and I will post them when she gets back to me.  This may take a little while as she is away at present.

Nova67 - Thank you for posting that pdf link. It does appear to be what we are all looking for to decipher these new codes that have popped up very recently. There was a time in late 2022/early 2023 that an update was done & now we have to also fill in a reCaptcha EVERY time we want to do a single search - which is a pain. These codes I think appeared at the same time. Anyway, problem solved thanks to that link. Cheers
