Abraham Townsend appears on the 1841 census in Abingdon prison. His age is given as 45, his occupation is weaver and he is born in county. He seems to have been committed for assaulting his wife according to newspaper articles and was unable to provide £10 surety so was jailed for a short time.
In 1851 he is living in Otwell street Abingdon, listed as married, but wife not living with him (unsurprisingly), his age is 61 (b abt 1790), he is a carpet weaver, born in Abingdon, and is deaf. I cannot find him on 1861 census, but I believe he died in Abingdon in 1869, burial 31 Jan 1869, residence Ock Street age 79 - birth year again abt 1790.
Can anyone find his wife or parents please?

Not found a baptism or marriage so far but this looks like him on the 1861 census transcribed as
Abraham Towend on ancestry age 72 birth year about 1789

Thank you that does look like him
After my post I found a Sarah M Townsend in 1851, married but no husband with her, with two sons, one named Abraham. There is a death for a Sarah Townsend in 1856 in Abingdon, which would fit with Abraham being a widower by 1861. I can't find baptisms for the children to confirm their father, though.

Thank you all, I was trying to track down Sarah's children after 1851, the two marriages naming Abraham as father fit nicely.

Not having much luck with baptisms or marriage but would say that's the correct family

In 1881 Matthew and Mary Ann Townsend have a niece Agnes Townsend b Culham Oxon abt 1878 living with them. Looks like she is the one reg with mmn Thatcher, so these Charles's daughter.
There is a Matthew Townsend died Abingdon district 1855 age 85. Could be connected as Abraham named first child Matthew.

According to some trees this Mathew Townsend is a half brother of Abraham no baptism to confirm .But did see that Mathew Townsend was also in Ock Street on the 1851 census

Thank you, I'd forgotten Abingdon was now in Oxfordshire, I'll look to see if OFHS covers the period I want. I have a DNA match to a descendant of Abraham Townsend through their son Charles, but she does not have any parents for Abraham on her tree. I am trying to link him to my Townsends from the same area, but I have about two generations missing

Thank you that confirms what some other trees have and fits with the Sarah found on censuses. Are there any witnesses mentioned, please?
-
Sorry to say - no witnesses shown.
To add, there are baptisms as follows which may be of interest in Abingdon St.Helens;
6-12-1778 Abraham Townsend s/o Mathhew & Jane, labr
2-8-1789 " " " Matthew & Elizth, Labr
2-6-1811 " " " Matthew, jnr & Elizth, weaver
31-5-1801 Ann Payton d/o William & Francis, Tailor
" Sarah Maria " " " " 15mnths

There are these burials - all Abingdon St.Helens;
Abraham Townsend 7-5-1779 s/o Matthew & Jane
" " 9-12-1831 Ock Street, aged 19 yrs
" " 21-4-1853 Stert Street, aged 22 Thames Street (Drowned)
" " 31-1-1869 Ock Street, aged 79
Sarah Townsend 9-11-1856 (aged 56) Stert St.

Thank you Alan
So it looks as if the Abraham who was the father of Charles was the one baptised in 1789 to Matthew and Elizabeth.
The Matthew who died in 1855 aged 85 (b abt 1770) was probably the father of Abraham (b1811 d 1831) and known as Matthew jnr, so likely to be son of Matthew and Jane.
If Jane died and Matthew snr remarried Elizabeth, then Matthew jnr would be half brother of Abraham (1789) as some trees have.

I've found a marriage of a Matthew to a Jane Leonard in 1770 in Abingdon.
-
Hi LizzieL,
The only burial for Jane Townsend I can see is;
bur. 15-7-1881 of Queen Street, aged 39 Abingdon St.Helens.
There is also this baptisms for reference;
3-5-1827 Frederick Townsend s/o Abraham & Sarah Maria, Barberm Broad Street - Abingdon St.Helens.
Looking for the bapt. of Jane Leonard I found these;
1-10-1722 Jane Lenard d/o William & Jane, weaver
10-3-1739 Jane Lenard d/o Jerem [sic] & Catherine, sackwaever bur. 9-12
21-4-1747 " " " " " " weaver
but so far as marriages of these Jane's are concerned, they married as follows;
1-1-1740 Samuel Hoser, labr
29-7-1770 Matthew Townsend ( as you already know)
20-12-1801 John Midwinter
4-9-1812 John Kay
