 manukarik, thank you for looking,

not sure if they are the same gentleman,

the problem's  I am having    1, I do not speak or read French  ::) which is making everything so difficult x

and I have about 30 pictures with various soldiers and places of war , i.e their regiments  on maneuver and others,  I know they are all family , and I am trying really hard not to give them the wrong information when I put them in the family tree. x

I know surnames for family are SONET,  GUINET, CUVILLER, Bernizet,   But most of the photo,s will be Sonet and Guinet .

Pierre Alexandre Sonet
1892–1967
BIRTH 26TH JAN 1892 • think ? but not sure , born Le Lamentin, Martinique
DEATH  1967 • Sartrouville, France

He served in both world wars.

First two pictures look like the same man maybe uncle Alphonse. the brother with Grandfather also looks like the same man to me. If so then he is Alphonse Sonet. Only my opinion.

Pierre Alexandre SONET:

Strange I can't find his birth entry in Le Lamentin, Martinique - have looked a few years either side!

I wonder if He just had a job there at some point Governer something ??

sorry off the point x   I am so great full what you found , but cannot make head or tale of it  ;D

I promised the Family I would sort this line out , but did not expect to be given piles of papers, photo's , old camera's and glass slides to go through, I gather the medals got stolen on a train from France to England , carrier fell asleep and ruck sack got taken  ???

You will see why I couldn't find a birth certificate for Pierre Alexandre SONET from his birth certificate in the link above (he was registered with his mother's name - ANCINELL).

And the plot gets thicker,

I am going to ignore scanning these pic;s for a while,

and look at the paperwork , i.e try to pull out marriage , birth, death certs,

( if I cannot read those, there maybe be no hope )

the French side will be doomed to obscurity   8) 8)

The photographer of the second photo is located in Mainz-Kastel which could suggest that he served in the French Army of the Rhine during the post WW1 occupation (1919-1930).

The birth certificate confirms that he was born in Martinique. I couldn't get a direct link to the relevant page to work.

Here is the link to the register, you then need to turn to slide 11 and look at entry 40.

If you find anything of interest in French, ask on here and I'm sure you'll get help with translation.

The first side note on Pierre Alexandre's Birth Certificate reads roughly:

No 40
Birth
Of ANCINELL
Alexandre-Pierre

In the certificate of their marriage, celebrated in the Soissons Town Hall (Aisne) on the twenty-first of October eighteen hundred and ninety-seven, Mr Charles Louis Auguste Sonet, retired Police Sergeant, dwelling in Soissons and Mrs Marie Eleuther Jeanne Ancinell, unemployed, dwelling in Soissons have recognised and legitimised by virtue of their union, the child Alexandre Pierre whose birth is recorded in the certificate opposite. Of which note is made by us, Librarian archivist of the Ministry of Colonies, on the 21 April  1898.

ADD: You will see his birth certificate gives his date and place of death as:
10 July 1968 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye (Seine et Oise) which differs from the details you have....

Just to say if you add 'French' in the title of any request for help with this side of your family Eilleen, then there are several wonderful people here on Rootschat who will help you.
They have been a godsend for my French research.  :)

Don't know if this will help :

link given by manukarik

1916 .Page 2 the person to notify ( of his death I guess) is Mme Petitclerc (friend) in Montpellier , not his father.

On the fiche matricule ( 1912) his father is not said feu Charles Sonet ( his mother Marie Eleuthere is said feue=  the late).

May Charles have died between 1912 and 1916 ?
