Title: Marrying the same person twice?
Post by: rogerb on Wednesday 08 February 23 13:49 GMT (UK)
Can anyone have a look at these 2 marriage certs from Tasmania in 1930 and 1931.  It looked at first as if the same marriage had taken place twice.  But the groom's first name is different.  OK, so perhaps the first husband died and she married a brother.  But the bride is shown as a spinster on both certificates.

I downloaded them from Family Search if you need a clearer view.

I see the 1930 marriage is not signed or witnessed so did it actually happen?

The second one where the groom is Francis is incomplete, there are no signatures of the Bride, Groom or the witnesses. The first one he has signed Frederick.

On the notice of intention to marry he is also Frederick.

Oh - thanks.  Did not notice the absence of signatures.  So presumably the celebrant/minister may have written out the certificate in advance of the wedding then...

I wondered if the earlier cert was valid given the absence of signatures all round.
I had a look at Tasmania BMDs but drew a blank with the indices on line for marriage. I did find entries for Edna Manson other than the marriage.

Checking out the index under "Remarks" it explains that marriages are covered 1900-1930. The "invalid" 1930 marriage might explain why it does not appear on the index? Not too familiar with the database!

Note - did a test shot and 1930 is the cut off date (but pre 1900 marriages are included).

Thanks for looking everyone.  I had a quick look at Trove and there was a Ronald Manson who died the day before the 1st date and also an Alexander Manson who died early in November.  Neither of whom seem to be close family according to my (slightly modest) research into this person.

However, I may try to look further at this.

If you search for Edna Manson and Edna Noyes you should get results. Couldn't spot the groom under Francis or Frederick

The Intention to Marry (on FamilySearch) dated 11 October 1930 for Francis and Edna is signed 'Frank Noyes'

Frank Noyes, rubber worker, born London, is admitted (as destitute) to the New Town Charitable Institute on 24 September 1930 and discharged the same day

One of the items on the Tasmanian Index refers to the divorce.
