Hi, is it possible to get an approx. dating of this photo? I was sent this scan by a distant relative who told me it was Robert Williams born 1810 in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. I was wondering if his clothing etc could give an indication of when the photo was taken and whether it fits in with how old Robert would have been at the time? If it is possible it would be lovely if it could be cleaned up a little to remove the age spots. Thank you.

Sharpened and cleaned up age spots.

Wow, thanks for these wonderful enhancements. Both replies look great!

I think you should be looking at the next generation as this looks to be an 1890s image.

He looks too young to have been born in 1810. Realistically a portrait (other than a Daguerrotype) would be unlikely to be from earlier than the 1850s.

An interesting photo. I am drawn to the pale colour and check pattern of his trousers.
He is obviously dressed for a special event (maybe a marriage?) - note he wears a button hole of flowers.
It is difficult to determine his age. He could be anything between 25 and 40 years (depending on what his occupation was).

I agree with Carol about the date - very very late 1880s and into the 1890s. Say in his 30s.

Yes, I thought so too. The person who has the original photo album said the name beside the photo looked like Thomas Williams but he thought the photo was of Robert (senior). We do have a Robert Williams (junior) born 1840 and he had a younger brother, Thomas Albert Williams born 1856 but he died aged 27 yrs of Thyphus in 1884. I think it is more likely Thomas in the photo. Would this fit the date/style of the photo better? He certainly was a spiffy dresser. I will check the family records to see if there was any weddings etc around this time that he may have been attending. Thanks again for all your insights and suggestions.

I think that would fit the style.
