I have an ancestor listed in the 1921 census having been born in Arlean Hill, Cumberland but can't find where this is place is, can anyone help. She was born in 1873.
-
Can't find Arleon but there is a place called Arlecdon Hill?
-
It reads Arlean Hill?
Added: sorry I see you need to identify place on a map

Do you have her in any other census to narrow birthplace or area in Cumberland?

Apart from her death in Hartlepool this is the only information we have.

A name would help, if you would like others to look. Did she marry? All info can sometimes help.

Even her place of birth does not help from birth record.
EDMUONDS, MARY ELLEN EGGINGTON (Should read Edmonds/Edmunds)

Thank you for the information, yes this is the death information I have. You have given me some positive leads to base further investigation.
Mary (Ellen/Eleanor) and Henry Harland were my father's adoptive parents but both died when he was in his teens. Apart from the 1921 census, both death certificates and that it was believed that Mary originated from Cumberland I had nothing to base my search.
Regards Glenda.

Glenda, something does not feel right. Records show that Mary Ellen Edmonds married William Christopher Harland in 1893 Durham. They appear in 1911 with 4 children.
However it would appear that Mary Ellen died in 1913 as below
HARLAND, MARY ELLEN died aged 42 = 1871 as per birth of Mary Ellen Edmonds
GRO Reference: 1913 S Quarter in HARTLEPOOL Volume 10A Page 137
William Christopher Harland then remarries Ann D Stothart in 1914.
5 Harland/Stothart chijdren born between 1916=1924
William and Ann are together on the 1939 war register.
This begs the question. Who is the Mary Harland born 1873 Cumberland on the 1921 census.
The Mary who died in 1934 was as below
HARLAND, MARY ELEANOR aged 61 = 1873
GRO Reference: 1934 M Quarter in HARTLEPOOL Volume 10A Page 152
Will look further tomorrow unless other's can find an answer

nursey dumpling, My searching along with other's has probably hit a wall. If finance allows I believe the marriage certificate of Henry & Mary in 1918 will hold answers, ie who her father was, his surname and occupation. I also think Mary had been previously married to a Mr Green but which one I have no idea. Please let us know your thoughts on what has been posted so far.
Regards
John

Hi John,
I am grateful for all the effort in supplying some useful information, all of which I will investigate further. I had come across some of the names in my own search but didnt have anything to confirm any links. I agree that getting the marriage certificate is the way forward.
Thank you all again.
Glenda
