Does anybody know if its possible to trace a seaman, all i have is his name and that he was a merchant seaman and a delegate for seaman's union.

Have you tried the National Archives website.
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
Perhaps post the details on here and see what can be found

Hi Rosie
His name was Francis Bentley and he is down as a delegate of the seaman's union in 1933, he appears to have died before 1961, his sons marriage certificate shows him as a merchant seamann, and dont know anything else.

Presumably the son is deceased, if not you will have to remove his name from your post.
Sorry I will have to leave this for today, hopefully someone may answer your query before I return

There is a possible family with Margaret BENTLEY (born 1898) in Redcar, Yorkshire on the 1939 register. She is widowed. (Children on the register all have mmn JONES, the oldest child being born in 1921)
