Title: Lancaster/Glenton/Caffray
Post by: MegLaw on Wednesday 05 April 23 02:42 BST (UK)
Hello all!

I am looking to establish some information from some folks that were born in/lived in Scarborough.

William Lancaster (born 1823, Scarborough, died 1849 - 1850/51), merchant marine apprentice, married Ann Glenton (born 1821, Scarborough) in 1847. They had a daughter, Mary Ann Lancaster (born 1848, Scarborough). I am looking for a record of William's death. By 1851, Ann and Mary Ann are living with mother's family, so he has passed away.

Ann Glenton/Lancaster then married John William Caffray (b. 1801, Dublin) in 1953. His death record is in North Yorkshire in 1868. However, I cannot find an 1861 census for Ann, Mary Ann, or John in North Yorkshire. I am doing so to try to establish a death date for Ann Caffray, as she was listed as dying 1855 but no with record on Ancestry. If she died in 1855, I would still expect to find an 1861 census for John or Mary Ann. I will continue to look into Aunts/Uncles perhaps for Mary Ann.

Thank you for any info!

Hi MegLaw
The Anne Caffrey who died in 1855 was 74 yrs old (born 1781) – so probably not your Anne.

I wonder if you have people with the same name muddled …..

I think the John Caffrey who died in Scarborough in 1868 was married to Jane. He was a confectioner.

It was John William Caffrey who married Ann Lancaster in 1853.
This one probably wrong census: In the 1851 Manchester census he is a “calender man”.

Jane Caffrey, wife of John Caffrey, confectioner, died in 1853. Could he have remarried the same year to Ann?

I was wondering that myself - however important to note that my Ann Glenton/Lancaster was 20 years younger than her remarried John W Caffray. It is odd to me that they would have left Yorkshire area (say to Manchester), as the daughter's adult life is in East Yorkshire. But yet post 1851, the trio vanishes when I search Ancestry, BMD indexes

That certainly could be the missing link that he quickly married after his first wife died.

Can't argue about the timeline.
