Title: Help with name of bride's mother - Completed.
Post by: cando on Wednesday 05 April 23 09:06 BST (UK)
I would appreciate help with deciphering the name of Isabella WILSON's mother.  This snip taken from a Victoria, Australia 1863 marriage certificate.  ?Grace WILEY.   This is the only resource that shows Isabella's mother's name.  She was born in Ireland in 1833.

I would be inclined to agree with Wiley as the surname.  Grace is certainly a possibility.  Are there any other letters on the certificate to compare with the G?

Sadly no.....I've spent ages trying to decipher it.  Thank you for your suggestions.

I think it might start with Q and if I really try I can see a u after it.

Possible also a y as ending.  Much of its lower loop being lost.

Sue

ADDING.  Alternatively-
It might be GEARY or similar.

Not really given names!

I think it's Mary, with an initial flourish at the top of the M.

Thank you Wivenhoe...actually have that notice.  I have all the info except the name of her mother....fairly important in researching the WILSON family and my ancestors.  Rev Robert WILSON"s second wife Anastasia SKELTON was my gggrandmother's sister.  I have only discovered he was was married twice.

With proper names that are difficult to read – in any hand and at any date – it can be helpful to start at the end and go backwards, because the first capital letter is often the most elaborate and therefore the hardest to decipher.

In this example, you also have to take into account that some of the penstrokes are broken, and provide them with your mind’s eye.

Bearing that in mind, the last three letters here are clearly …ary (compare -ry- in Puryer). So you would expect the first letter to be M, which I believe it is, with an initial flourish at the top. Once you have seen that M, it’s hard to read the name as anything other than Mary.

Thank you.

" I have only discovered he was was married twice."

When was the first marriage?. When was the second marriage?

Is Isabella naming her birth mother....or...step-mother, being the only mother she knows?

Wivenhoe....I don't know when the Rev Robert WILSON married for the first time however his eldest daughter Rebecca was born c1819. She died in 1893 in South Australia.

His second marriage was in Dromore, Co Tyrone in 1837. I have the newspaper announcement of that marriage.

His second wife was Anastasia SKELTON, my gggrandmother's sister.  I have hand written notes about the family penned by my gggrandfather not long before his death in 1897.

Thank you for your interest.

I think the surname is WILEY. Second given name to one of the Rev Robert WILSON's grandchildren. I thought it was an usual given name.
