Title: Nearest churchyard/cemetery to Backhill of Clackriach
Post by: Aliww on Sunday 23 April 23 11:07 BST (UK)
My family are firmly rooted in the northeast of Scotland and I am looking for the burial place of my 2 x great grandmother Elizabeth Anderson (nee Gavin) who died of typhoid at Backhill of Clackriach on 7 March 1874, three days after giving birth to her ninth child, Andrew, who died on the day he was born.   Her husband was called George Anderson.

Welcome to RootsChat :)

The important detail when looking for burials at this time in rural areas is the parish. Backhill of Clackriach is in the parish of Old Deer (which is where Elizabeth's death was registered), so the starting point for your search is the parish kirkyard of Old Deer.

The surviving burial records will be in the care of Aberdeenshire Council, and most of them are available at www.deceasedonline.com. If you cannot find the burial you are looking for you can try contacting the council and telling them that you have tried Deceased Online without success. See https://www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/communities-and-events/bereavement/buchan-burial-grounds/

There is an online index to names that appear on gravestones in some of the graveyards in Aberdeenshire, but I don't see a listing of Elizabeth Gavin or Anderson. You can look for yourself at https://www.anesfhs.org.uk/databanks/memorial-inscriptions/miindex

Many thanks for your prompt reply.  I'll go down the routes you suggest.

If her husband didn't remarry, there is a good chance that he would be buried with her. When did he die?

George Anderson did re-marry, and died in Bulwark in 1924.  I can find no graves online and I guess that the family just couldn't afford gravestones.
