Please could someone kindly look up Alfred Dodd on the 1871 census?
He was with his family in the Northwich area in the 1861 Census RG 9/2602, aged 7 years.
So far I have been unable to find him.
Many thanks.

Yes it is Colin. Thank you for your reply.

I was unable to find any trace of the 1871 census, it might be because of the note below.
The 1871 United Kingdom Census Records Today
The original census schedules that were completed by household members were destroyed. However, the enumerators’ books were kept and in 1970 the records were microfilmed. The microfilm copies of the books for England, Wales, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands are available at the Family Records Centre in London.

Thanks for the info Colin, that would explain why I couldn’t find Alfred.

Alfred and Ellen’s marriage certificate shows their residences as ‘Castle’.
There are 1871 census records for Castle, Northwich but no sign of him.
Ellen is in Lancashire with her family in 1871 and they are still there in 1881 so she perhaps moved back to the area.
(Provided I have the right Ellen).

There are a few newspaper snippets - very difficult to read- which mention Alfred Dodd.
I can’t see any 1870/71 but one in 1872 mentions Castle Northwich so he seems to be around there.

I guess this is Alfred's Marriage Sep 1879 to MADDOCK Ellen
Northwich 8a 340
There are a number of birth registrations, mother Maddock, Northwich.
1879 - 1885 and maybe beyond.

Alfred's mother was also a Maddock: Thomas Dodd married Susannah Maddock on 17th July 1851.
Just a long shot but, looking at the 1871 census, there is an Alfred Dodd in Liverpool, b 1854 in Liverpool. Alfred was born late 1853
There is no record of an Alfred Dodd born in Liverpool near that time, so I am wondering if he might be the one from Cheshire.
It gives his occupation as a grocer's assistant, which is different from his marriage. The occupier's children and five of the other assistants were recorded as born in Liverpool. An assumption that Alfred was born there also?

I think Alfred and Ellen were possibly first cousins.
I had seen that Alfred in Liverpool but then saw this - so not sure.
There is a complicated family in 1861 2367
Liverpool

James Dod a widower with a sister in law Jane Watkin and his children.
Ancestry has the children as Watkin.
Alfred Watkin Dod was born 1853.
I wondered if the 1871 Alfred was him but I didn’t check any further.

Thank you for your response to my initial enquiry about Alfred in 1871 census.
My reasons for trying to find him were prompted by discovering from the 1891 census RG 12/2837 that his son Albert was born in Manchester, Lancs. Northwich had been crossed out. In 1901 census Northwich was again stated as the place of birth. This could of course be an error.
I was wondering if Alfred could have been in Manchester in 1871 moved back to Northwich, and returned to Manchester when Albert was born. I have found a possible baptism for Albert for 27th June 1883 St James, Collyhurst, 12, Hannah Street. There is also a large gap between the children's ages from Albert in 1883 to Fred in 1892, which seems unusual.
As far as I know David, there is no connection with Liverpool. I wondered at the relationship between the Maddocks, it is possible they were related.
Heywood had found a possible link with Ellen in Lancashire in 1871. It wouldn't be in Manchester by any chance?

I think there are two Dodd/Maddock families though so some/all of the above children might be another family.

According to a tree online, Ellen Maddock's father was William, 1828-1921, the brother of Alfred's mother, Susannah. William married Martha Parsonage in Whitegate on 10th November 1846, and there is a photograph of him.
Re Alfred Watkin Dod, he was with his father in Waterloo, Great Grosby, in 1871.
Although Alfred Dodd had no known link to Liverpool, perhaps that is why he can't be found in 1871?
None of the online trees know where he was at that time.

Thanks for that re Alfred Watkin so still no wiser. :-\

I have had another look at the 1871 Census for Liverpool RG10/3755 seen by David. Where there is a 17 year old Alfred as a grocers assistant for George Wall.
The birth place of previous people on the list is Liverpool, with ditto, ditto down the list. There is a possibility that it was done in error, and this could be the correct Alfred. But it seems a long way to travel for a job when most of the family have been involved in local farm work.
I could find an Alfred aged 25 in Liverpool in the 1881 census and he was a bookbinder living with his family, but his age is a bit out to be the grocers assistant.
There is still the question of Ellen missing in 1871. She was also known as Nellie, but I had no luck finding her under this name either 🤔

You could be right Heywood! I think these are the correct Maddock family.
Martha was a couple of years older than William and she was born in Gresford.
Many thanks for looking them up for me.😊
