Title: James Crossett, died Nov 27, 1927 in Durham, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania
Post by: Peggy13 on Wednesday 07 June 23 22:35 BST (UK)
James Crossett was born in Ireland on Dec 25, 1827 as per his death certificate in Pennsylvania, his daughter Martha Engle being the informant. This dob does not agree with the various censuses. In 1920, his dob is 1830.
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01scy/S
In 1910, he is age 75, so born 1835. https://www.rootschat.com/links/01scz/
In 1900, his dob is Oct 1834. https://www.rootschat.com/links/01sd0/
James is known to have married Catherine Vorhees Sept 8, 1874 but his previous marriage may have been to Nancy Kennedy Sept 7, 1858. This prior marriage is likely as James had a son John abt 1861, Thomas abt 1870, William abt 1865 and Mary abt 1867. There are no parents given when a James Crossett married Nancy Kennedy. https://www.rootschat.com/links/01sd1/
Likewise, no parents given when James married Kate Vorhees but he is age 39 so born abt 1834.
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01sd3/  Seems most records say 1834ish.
James' father was John but there is a difference of opinion as to James' mother.  There is a tree which says Mary which I don't believe, largely because John was a widower when he died in Ireland in 1878 but Mary supposedly died in 1879 in PA. Another says mother Annie Foster which is possible, in my opinion.
Would there be an obit which might help with this family? Thanks for any help
Peggy

Do you have his civil war record?

19 August 1862 John Crossett 30   Weaver
19 August 1862 James Crossett 26   Weaver

Are they brothers?

Census of 1863 again John aged 30, James aged 26

Thanks so much, amondg, for all your excellent work, and for the date of death of Katherine Crossett nee Vorhees, in 1912. James is a widower in 1920. He is age 89 which backdates to dob of 1830. I see that, as per the 1920, James emigrated 1856 which would fit with a date of marriage to Nancy in 1858. It is of concern that in 1860, 1862, and 1870, James is a carpet weaver but in 1900, he is pump hand in a ship yard, and in 1910 he is a boiler maker in a ship yard. Despite that, the names of the sons are the same in 1910 as in 1870 in the same birth order except there is no James in 1910. Did he marry or die young? Looks like the same family.
Martha is 30 in 1910 so born abt 1880 so must be James and Kate's daughter.  On the 1910, both James and Kate say it is their second marriage, and Kate says she is the mother of 6 children, 2 living. That would be Martha and ???. Maybe one from her previous marriage.
As for James' mother being possibly Mary, perhaps I have him with the wrong family back in Ireland as I don't have a brother John, same age although there are many gaps between children of John Crossett and Annie Foster. I will check for a John and Mary Crossett back in Ireland. Today, I will phone the Green Mountain Cemetery. Also look for Mary in 1860, age 69 i.e. born abt 1790 in Ireland.
Thanks again amondg.

I phoned the cemetery for the burials of James and Katherine, also anyone else buried in the same plot. For more than one person, they want $150. So I said ok, how about info just on the burial of James? That's free.  They will get back to me tomorrow or Monday.

Thanks again, amondg. I have now found an online tree for a John Crossett, born 1795 in Ireland, died 1862 in Philadelphia, with wife Mary born 1891, died 1879 in Philadelphia. That fits with the Mary on the 1870 census, age 79.
The children on the online tree do not include sons John and James, but do have sons William John with wife Elizabeth Harbison and William Dec 30, 1889 in Philadelphia and Thomas who was born 1828 in Ireland and was living in Kensington Ward 6 in Philadelphia in 1850 with parents John and Mary. Maybe same family??
Thanks for update on Samuel Crossett

Always double check an online tree, what proof do they have etc. ?

Philadelphia Inquirer March 21 1901

On March 18, 1901 John Crossett aged 67 years, funeral Thursday afternoon at 1 o clock at his late residence 1418 East Columbia Avenue. Officers of the 11th Police District are invited. Proceed to Palmer Vault, Green Mount Cemetery.

Oh yes, indeed, tree info must be doublechecked. You have possibly found son John who was on the 1870 census next door to James. But this John sounds like he was a policeman rather than a weaver.
My previous message should have said that William John died Dec 30, 1889 in Philadelphia. I missed the word "died".
Thanks for your help, amondg.

Once the weaving mills closed they would have to find other jobs, weaving was moved to Georgia after the civil war

This one is interesting but not proof of relationship

Public Ledger Tuesday October 14 1862.
CROSSETT, on the 12th instant Mr. John Crossett in his 67th year. The friends and relatives, also the Israelite Lodge #28 of the A.P.A. are respectfully invited, from his residence of 1327 Savery Street.
Funeral Wednesday 15th at 1 o clock, Proceed to Odd Fellows Cemetery.

When John and James enlisted 19 August 1862 they lived on Savery Street.

They could be sons or nephews until a definite relationship is found, however a good clue.

Other Cemeteries I have seen mentioned going through the obits are Mount Moriah, Greenwood, Holy Sepulchre, and Fernwood.

Wow, you have found Nancy’s death,in 1870,  wife of James, as well as John, father of James in 1862. The address ties them all together. Also possibly James’s brother John in 1901. Now if Mary’s death is found in 1879, that might bring in William John and Thomas.
You are amazing. Thank you.

Look for the will of Alexander Crossett he died late 1901 or early1902 aged 37 buried in Odd Fellows cemetery, newspaper entry is 2 January 1902.

He left a will $11,500 to his mother and sisters apparently he ran a saloon at the corner of Savery and Garard.

It's the address again

ADDED found it not useful, he was son of Alexander and Ann Crossett, left his estate to his mother Ann and sister Sarah Crossett

Thank you, Sandra. I am still trying to find out Mary’s maiden name which James’s death in 1927 does not have. I don’t know if William’s death would have it. In the meantime, I have written to a likely church in Ireland to find the marriage of John and Mary and/or the baptisms of the 4 children that I know of.

My goodness you have had great success while I was sleeping glad to hear all the updates.

Do you think James and his brother John civil war records will help with family ties?

James was a private Company C regiment 119 V (I think this means volunteers) Pennsylvania

He served from 19 August 1862- 19 June 1865.

Don't forget the Franklin Cemetery where his first wife Nancy is buried. Her name doesn't show on PA Roots but I think only those with a headstone are listed.

It is quite possible that James did remarry after Nancy died May 1870, as he had 5 children to care for. He would have had to marry before July 1872 to have a child by April 1873. The only thing is that one of later censuses says that it is the second marriage for both of James and Kate. Still, I think it is probable.
Great find for baptism and death of Thomas, son of William and Elizabeth. Thank you. I have been looking for Thomas, son of John and Mary, after the 1850 census, hoping that his death record might have Mary’s maiden name, although not likely to have it.
Thanks again. Peggy

I checked the date of death of James Crossett, son of  James and Nancy born abt 1861 who died May 13, 1888 which means that James would have had two sons named  James if he had another one born in 1873 with Mary McQuade. Hmmm.

I think seeing the original entries would be the better idea, we have conflicting information

Public Ledger, April 21 1873

James son of JOHN and MARGARET aged 3 days.

YET !!!!!!

Philadelphia death certificates have James as the son of JAMES and MARY, 20 April 1873
------
Burial records Laurel Hill Cemetery

James Crossett aged 3 days address 1931 CallowHill Street buried 21 April at 4pm.
--------
Mary McQuade Crossett was buried Laurel Hill and her father lived on Callowhill Street.
----------------
If the child was male and had not been given a name was he inadvertently registered under his fathers name?  We may never know.

I expect Mary Crossett nee McQuade died of complication due to childbirth it was common.

On FamilySearch, there is a marriage of James Crossett to Mary McQuaide on May 8, 1872 in Philadelphia.
Then I looked for John and Elizabeth with daughter Mary in 1870 and I found one although Mary is 18 so it would be only 20 in 1872 and I can’t see the address.
It is possible that the baby’s name was incorrectly given as James. If the mother was in her 23rd year, the parents couldn’t be John , brother of James, and Margaret because Margaret was born about 1837. So back to James and Mary as  the parents.

After I started researching James Crossett who died in 1927, I found an online tree which said there was a John Crossett born in 1795 who died 1862 in Philadelphia with wife Mary born 1791 who died 1879 in Philadelphia. Subsequent research  shows that this was the family due to the fact that they all lived at 1327 Savery Street, which was both John and Mary’s residence when they died (John in 1862 and Mary in 1879) and the residence of sons John and James when they enlisted for the military. The tree had sons William John born abt 1819 and Thomas born 1828 with these parents (the tree did not have James and John) and we find Thomas with them in 1850, age 22, with William John living next door. Mary age 79 is living wth James in 1870. It all fits to be the same family.

According to online tree aforementioned, James and Nancy's son Thomas age 4 on 1870 census, age 15 on 1880 census, died May 15, 1925 at 6328 So. Sangamon, Chicago, Illinois, USA. Familysearch is misbehaving as I was trying to see if his death certificate verified his mother's surname. Perhaps he has an obit.
The 1880 census for James Crosset and wife Kate has son Thomas on it but no James or William although we know son William was alive in 1910 and son James, if we have the correct date of death, died 1888.

Last week, I talked to Green Mount Cemetery and they said they did not have James Crossett who died 1927 in their graveyard. Said they could only look for one person for free so couldn't check for his wife Katherine who died 1912.
So I emailed them and asked for Katherine. Today, I got a reply saying Katherine who died 1912  is there along with her husband James who died 1927 as well as a Leonard Engel Dec 1896. Also in another section of this lot are Charles Engel Oct 1937, and Martha Nov 1932. Charles Engel was the original purchaser of this lot in 1896. Goes to show sometimes you get the wrong info on first try.

Persistence pays off and getting a person who will actually do the lookup.

Amondg, you did find the correct John Crossett's death in 1901, as he was living with his daughter Charlotte Bush/Busch in 1900 at the same address
Quote - On March 18, 1901 John Crossett aged 67 years, funeral Thursday afternoon at 1 o clock at his late residence 1418 East Columbia Avenue. Officers of the 11th Police District are invited. Proceed to Palmer Vault, Green Mount Cemetery.

John's wife was Margaret who died Feb 21, 1890 on 1418 Hanover Street but I have never been able to find out Margaret's surname. I was hoping that son Samuel's death June 11, 1905 might give his parents names but the names are not on findagrave. Their names are not given in the Philadelphia Inquirer on June 15, 1905, that you found, amondg, unless there was more to his death notice.

Philadelphia Inquirer 15 June 1905
CROSSETT, June 11 Samuel husband of Emma, son of Late John and Margaret Crossett aged 48 years,
------ Internment at Green Mount.
So my last hope to find Margaret's surname is the death of Charlotte Bush, after 1920. She was born abt 1864 and was still living at 1418 E. Columbia in 1920. Oh, and there was a son John A. Crossett, born Mar 18, 1868 and last seen on the 1870 census.
Thanks for any help
Peggy

Charlotte Busch died 30 January 1921 buried 3 February 1921 Green Mount Cemetery.

Ref: Green Mount Cemetery records on Family search

Just the usual mortuary notice in the Philadelphia Inquirer dated 1 February 1921

ADDED
See if you can get her marriage certificate - married 29 July 1885 as Lottie Crossett
to George C Bosh in Philadelphia

Marriages should have the parents names

I couldn’t find a marriage record that gave the parents names. Only the date and place-Philadelphia monthly meeting.

Try from the state of Pennsylvania or the city of Philadelphia instead.

So my last hope to find Margaret's surname is the death of Charlotte Bush, after 1920. She was born abt 1864

Charlotte Busch died 30 January 1921 buried 3 February 1921 Green Mount Cemetery.

Wow, I can’t believe it! You found it, RJ137! And the surname is York. There was an online tree who had a son, John York Crossett  belonging to John Crossett and Margaret Cooney,  even though he was born 1868 and John Crossett and Margaret Cooney didn’t marry till 1875. So they had him in the wrong place as Charlotte’s brother John was born Mar 1868.
Thank you everyone who has helped me with this puzzle. Thank you very much, amondg, for finding Charlotte‘s date of death.
What do you think is the informant’s name? Last name looks like Romer, but the first name is a puzzle.

It looks like the informant is the undertaker, and it looks like Wm (William) Romer.

Thank you shelleyesq. I did wonder about William and the last name might be Rowen, looking at the area where he, the undertaker, signed again, lower right.

I think John York Crossett married Sarah Clendenning Feb 19, 1893 in Camden, NJ and died Sept 1, 1900 in Chester, Delaware Co., Pennsylvania as a result of a railroad accident. Findagrave says there was an article in the Chester Times of Sept 4, 1900. Then Sarah died in 1906. Poor wee children.

I have found an index of John Crossett's death Sept 1, 1900 and burial Sept 4.
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01sg5/
Findagrave says there is mention in the Chester Times Sept 3, 1900, Page 5. Can anyone find that?
I also found grant of administration to Sadie, John's wife on May 28, 1901.

I don't have access/subscription to Newspaper Archive. This is a copy of the OCR transcription of that article, including the several typo errors produced from the optical reading of that page.

Fantastic. That would be him, RJ137. The age would be 32, instead of 12 but the address is the same as on the death index, Engle Street. Thank you very much.

I have been working hard to find William, born abt 1864, to James Crossett and Nancy Kennedy. With a great lot of help, we have found all his siblings, including Thomas who died in Chicago, John who died in Memphis, James who died in Philadelphia, and Mary Elizabeth who died in Queens (actually we don't have her exact date of death). William is found with his father James in 1910 in Philadelphia,  still single, with his brothers John and Thomas, and sister Martha Engel. Then what? There is a William H. Crossett as a member of the Frankford Ave Methodist Episcopal Church in 1919 but it is not him, it is William Hugh Crossett.

RJ137 found the obit of John Alexander Crossett who died Apr 19, 1935 in Memphis, Tennessee. He had a wife May Blanche Lowe, who may or may not have been his first wife. I haven't found a marriage for them although they are living together as early as 1916, as per the Memphis City Directory. Their children are John Alexander Jr., born Nov 17, 1921 in Memphis, Frances V. Crossitt who was born May 20, 1922 in Memphis, and Bernice aka Minnie born July 26, 1923. When John died in 1935, the children were very young. I have not found the death of their mother but I am told that the children ended up in an orphanage so thinking that May died shortly after John. Of course, in some places and at some times, orphanages were used to look after children when the parents couldn't or didn't want to. I can't find May's death anywhere in the USA. Or remarriage. Her parents were John Wesley Lowe and Martha Jennie Burnett. May may have had a son Virgil before she met John A. Crossett. Thanks for any help. Peggy

The son James of James and Mary died 20 April 1873 aged 3 days. Mary nee McQuade died on the

23rd, 3 days after the child she had given birth to.

See ADDED information on post timed 06.23
I have found out that the James Crossett married to Mary McQuade was the son of Adam Crossett and Mary, and the family lived at 1931 Callowhill St., Philadelphia, so this is a different James Crossett than the one who married Nancy Kennedy and Kate Vorhees.

I’m directly related to John Alexander Crossett, son of John Alexander Crossett, brother of James. My father was sent to the orphanage with his sisters Frances and Bernice. Is this chat started for search of info on James?

Hi Fencross. I am delighted to see your reply. I was not notified that I had a reply. Yes, I started this post for Search of Info on James Crossett married to Nancy Kennedy and then Kate Voorhees. I do have a son James to James Crossett and Nancy Kennedy born in 1861 and died in 1888. Although he died young, I have that James Junior crossett was married to Lizzie Ristine in 1884 and they had a daughter Mineretta in 1887 who was still alive in 1941. I believe there was another child, but I don’t have the name. Do you?
Would you have the name of the mother of James Crossett born about 1834 who married Nancy Kennedy in 1858? Or where in Ireland that this James was born?
I would be happy also to have more information on John Alexander Crossett Junior and his siblings. Do you know when their mother May  Blanche Crossett nee Lowe died? I do have John’s siblings as Frances and Bernice a.k.a. Minnie but I also have another female Crossett born June 3, 1926 for whom I do not have a name. I have one son and four daughters for John Alexander Junior although I do not have a name for one of the daughters.
Thank you so very much for replying to this post. You can PM me if you like.

Hello Fencross, I was following up on this family and on your message. I would be  happy to have any information on this family.
