Title: Robert Wilson 1832 - ? Paisley
Post by: garngad on Tuesday 04 July 23 07:26 BST (UK)
Would like some help please in tracing the marriage and death of Robert Wilson born circa 1832 his wife ? Jane/Jeannie McLachlan/McLauchlan.
Both found on the 1861 Census at 26 Bells Row Wishaw with son Robert born 1860.
On young Robert's birth line born 29 Bells Row Wishaw father Robert is a Coalminer mother Jeannie ms McLachlan there is no marriage details.
1861 Census states Robert (29) and wife (23) from Paisley son Robert (8 months) from Wishaw.
1862 they have a daughter Jane born 139 Caledonia Rd Wishaw father Robert Coalminer mother Jane ms McLauchlan married sept 15 1858 Paisley.
1866 I found young Robert had died in Paisley father Robert a Coalminer mother Jane ms McLauchlan with help from RC found that young Robert had drowned in the River Linn at Saucel Paisley newspaper clipping says he was aged 8 death cert states 7 but he must have just turned 6 as he was born July 18th 1860 and drowned on Aug 27th 1866 paper states he was from Bridge St Paisley.
Have found no trace of parents or sister Jane in 1871 Census.
Jane then marries my grt grandfather James Steel (1864) in 1881 she is aged 19 address given 40 Maxwellton Paisley parents Robert a Coalminer and Jane ms McLachlan both deceased. they go on to have at least four children 2 die young 2 survive but Jane dies in 1888 five days after giving birth to her last child. So trying to find proof of marriage and deaths of Jane's parents if possible thanks.

A witness to her signature was a Hugh Peebles looking back to the 1861 Census there was a Hugh Pebiles/Peebles maybe visiting with his wife Margaret at her parents home in Wishaw but the only marriage that connects the names I found was in 1861 dec 31st when a Hugh Pebles married a Margaret Wilson in Paisley I was possibly thinking this could be a aunt of young Jane's but the marriage is 8 months after the Census. P.S forgot to add Margaret Wilson's parents where William Wilson (deceased) and Agnes ms Wilson ?.

1881 Census address 40,Maxwelton Paisley
Hugh Peebles age 40 ( grocer )
Margaret Peebles age 40
Hugh Peebles age 17 Joiner

1891Census
Address 40 Maxwellton Paisley Abbey
Hugh Peebles age 50 ? Coal Miner
Marg W Peebles age 50

Thanks Rosie great find the 1881 census grocer must be mis conscribed as he was a coal miner in 1861 but all the ages fit for both census's.
I have traced the Marion Hart nee Wilson to a marriage in 1847 to Gavin Hart in Paisley
they are with Gavin's family in paisley 1851 census. 1861 census there is a Ann Wilson lodging with them in Paisley. Have them in 1871 you gave me the 1881 census with Jane Wilson also have Gavin's death in 1898 and Marion's (Wilson) in 1903 so plenty to cross reference to go on. Your help has been fantastic thank you.

Same here I thought they died between son Robert's (1860) death in Aug 1866 and Dec 1881 according to daughter Jane's (1862) marriage but it is possible one or both had died between 1862 Jane's birth in Wishaw/Holytown and young Robert's untimely death in 66 but his certificate just states that father Robert is not present no mention of mother or home address.

There is also the possibility that the father Robert Wilson abandoned the family
It would help if we could find Jane the daughter on the 1871 census

This might be a possibility for daughter Jane Wilson ?
1871 Census Industrial Girls School 61,Rottenrow Glasgow
Jeannie Wilson born about 1861 Glasgow age 10

Might be worth a trip to the Mitchell Library and check out poor relief records to see if there is anything on this family ?

Aye thanks Rosie for everything I had planned to visit the Mitchell to see on this and other strings of my tree soon........ as a conclusion for now I went back to the 1861 census for another wee look and view the marriage of Margaret Wilson (1840) and Hugh Peebles/Pebles (margaret has stated her father as William Wilson and mother Agnes mn Wilson ?) followed Margaret's line she died in 1904 in Paisley her son states his grandmother's maiden name as Margaret Lapsley ? it seems the census you found stating her husband occupation in 1881 (grocer) is part correct as they seemed to own property house/shop's in Paisley including 39 and 40 Maxwellton Rd until his death in 1892 then Margarets death in 1904 so I will do as you say regards the Mitchell and keep digging thanks for the help thus far cheers..... Garngad.

So a wee update so far regards Agnes Lapsley born circa 1807 married William Wilson in Paisley dec 5th 1824 went on to have at least 8 children from 1825-1842 in Paisley.
Her last child Margaret (1842) married a Hugh Peebles/Pebles/Pibles in 1861 in Paisley.
On Agnes death certificate in 1878 a Hugh Peebles son in law is the witness.
Hugh a coal miner and Margaret go on to own shops and property in Paisley looking at the valuation rolls for the period.... though these named are not directly descendants of mine I am putting the information here for any one who may be related or looking into the Wilson/Lapsley/Peebles families.
my connection is through Agne's son Robert Wilson's (1832) daughter Jane (1862) who married my grt grandfather James Steel (1864) in Paisley in dec 1881.
