Another brick wall.
This man was my 5xgreat grandfather.I have his baptism down as 29th Sept 1773 Lenham, but im not sure where that came from,as i cant find it anywhere now.All i can find is his marriage to Sarah Luckhurst on 9th August 1795 in High Halden. Please can anyone find anything else on him.

Did he marry Sarah Luckhurst. His abode was given as Feversham
-
Yes,he married Sarah in High Halden in 1795,the same place my 4xgreat grandfather Daniel Coppins was born.Daniel lived in Faversham, and most of his siblings were born there.

Thanks for this.I see that John had a son Daniel with his first wife. That was also the name of my 4xgreat grandfather.I think i recall there being several Johns baptised in that part of Kent;i will have a closer look in a minute.egerton seems most likely, given his first child was born there.

Well, ive hit a bit of a dead end with Joseph. There is one born in the right timeframe, but in Suffolk, rather than Kent. Not sure how i can tell if thats him or not.

Thanks for the reply.
Ive managed to find a bit on the Hookers, but i cant find any local births for a Joseph Coppins. His descendants are all Kent based,so im not sure how i would know if he came to Kent from further afield.

There is an unnamed child of Thomas & Sarah COPPENS baptised 29th July 1697 at St Michael, Smarden. I'm not sure you'll be able to prove it was Joseph though.
-
I didn’t see a baptism for Joseph.
You would expect him to have been born in the 1690s as his wife was born abt 1698, but he may have been born earlier than that.
There do seem to be some COPPIN families in the Headcorn - Smarden area at this time.
For example there is a William (Guilielmus) COPPINS married to Jane JUDD in 1683 in Headcorn, and then baptisms for their children in Smarden. (but no Joseph)
There was also a marriage in Canterbury for Joshua COPPEN to Elizabeth THOMPSON in 1667.
Sorry, that it isn’t much help.

Thanks for the reply.
Im grateful for all info.I think there was one Joseph Coppins born around the right time, but in Norfolk,if i remember rightly.Im not sure how id go about establishing whether thats him or not.Whether there would be any info proving a move from Norfolk to Kent, for example.

Looking at online trees, I think everyone has got stuck with Joseph.
Given that Coppens, & variants, is a local name I think it is unlikely there was a Norfolk connection. Smarden is an inland rural area. If we were talking about the coast the possibilities are endless.
I've looked at Smarden memorial inscriptions (Kent MIs can be so informative) but have drawn a blank.
I can't see a likely will.
This baptism seems to be the best fit timewise
an unnamed child of Thomas & Sarah COPPENS baptised 29th July 1697 at St Michael, Smarden
I might be worth looking at Bishops Transcripts to see if the child is named.
Or perhaps investigate the parish chest records to see if there is any mention of the family.
It also might be worth looking at the records of the Baptists.
-
Thanks for all this.
Do you know if Bishops Transcripts are available online?
Nel.
-
Kent History & Library Centre have some but I'm not sure of the dates. It might be worth sending the email for clarification and also availability online.
-
Ok.Thanks a lot for the help and advice.

Just for curiosity, an Arthur Coppins ended up in Motueka, South Island, New Zealand. My gr grandfather learnt the shoemaking trade from him, finishing in 1870. I dont know any other details. Good luck, Allison
