Looking to go back a Generation.
John Byers & Jane Raine are my 4x great grandparents so am looking for my 5x great grandparents.
Jane Raine was born in 1766. I believe in the Durham area probably in Darlington. She was buried on 25 April 1847 at St Cuthbert's Darlington as Jane Byers. Jane married John Byers on the 21 Jan 1793 at St Cuthbert's Darlington by banns both of this parish. They had 4 Children, Ann 1796, Mary (Marie) 1799, John 1801, and my 3x great-grandmother Sarah 1803 all in Darlington and bapt in St Cuthbert's.
I do not have them on the 1841 census.
John's birth date is unknown to me but as he was of the parish would say he was born in Darlington.
Any push in the right direction would be helpful.

Freereg also has a son Henry bap 30 March 1794 to John Byers - skinner at St Cuthbert's
ADDED
Possibly the name of John's father.
Do you have Jane Byers death certificate? who reported her death, it might help find her 1841 perhaps given the wrong surname.

York Herald 1 May 1847
Same day (appears to be 23 April 1847) at Darlington Mrs. Jane Byers aged 82.

Can not get any certificates at the moment as I had to cancel my debit card due to an attack on my account. (someone used my card but I picked up the transaction straight away).
But I can look on FindMyPast and see if I can see the Death Notice.
Thank you amondg for your help.

The full transcript of Mary Byers' baptism from DRO is very informative:
Darlington, St. Cuthbert
3 Feb 1799 Mary Byers, born 2 Feb, 2nd daughter of John Byers (skinner, native of Carlisle, Cumberland) by his wife Jane Raine (native of Hedley in the Parish of Ovingham, Northumberland)
-
One of the witnesses at the Byers-Raine marriage was Sarah Raine.
-
Added: I just noticed that OP says Jane Raine born 1766, so this is probably irrelevant, but I’ll leave it just in case.
There are two candidate baptisms for this Jane Raine at Ryton Holy Cross:
Ryton, County Durham, Holy Cross
16 May 1773 Jane Raine, of Leadgate, daughter of Letalies Raine
[This Leadgate is 2 miles east of Hedley-on-the-Hill.]
FindMyPast has an image and a transcript that gives the father as Letitius.
Also (but less likely?)
Ryton, County Durham, Holy Cross
3 Sep 1775 Jane Rayne, of Winlaton, daughter of William Rayne
DRO has Raine baptisms at Ryton Holy Cross going back to 1616, the majority linked to Winlaton. The baptism of Jane Raine is the only one to mention Leadgate as an abode. There are none that mention Hedley as an abode.
-
Here is the correct? Jane Raine:
Ovingham, Northumberland , St Mary the Virgin
16 Jul 1767 Jane Rain, of Hedley, daughter of Ralph & Mary Rain
This is the earliest Raine record of any kind at Ovingham, at DRO, but their baptism records only start in 1750.
-
OP is getting birth year from age given at death in 1847, GRO has age 81 newspaper has age 82.
-
candidate for the burial of Jane Raine’s father, Ralph
Darlington, St Cuthbert
20 Feb 1795 Ralph Rain of Darlington, flaxdresser
-
Many Thanks for everyone's time and help.
The name Ralph rings a bell.
I will study this tonight and see if I can make any headway.
After 42 years of searching what is DRO?
Many thanks

Durham Records Office?
-
Thanks. Used them a lot in the past.
-
I meant Durham Records Online, perhaps you did too?
-
Yes, that's the one.
Will have a look when I have a spare minute.
Thank you.

Jane was the widow of John Byers. She died in the Darlington workhouse on 23rd April 1847. The cause of Death was old age. She was 81. A workhouse employee signed the certificate as in attendance workhouse Darlington.
So now looking for John's Death.

According to a tree on F.M.P Ralph Rain's wife was a Mary Snowball.
I am now following this lead to see if it gets me anywhere.
I changed Janes's birth date to 1667 and Ralph and Mary came up on a tree search.
Here is the correct? Jane Raine:
Ovingham, Northumberland, St Mary the Virgin
16 Jul 1767 Jane Rain, of Hedley, daughter of Ralph & Mary Rain
This is the earliest Raine record of any kind at Ovingham, at DRO, but their baptism records only start in 1750.
Thank you AlanBoyd. I will see where this leads me.
I will also contact St Cuthbert and see if they can help.
Thank you to all for your help.

In case you haven’t seen it, there is a mini tree at geneanet that includes Mary Snowball of Ovingham at
https://tinyurl.com/exznjyrd (https://tinyurl.com/exznjyrd)
although it doesn't include her marriage to Ralph Raine
-
That's the same tree I found on FindMyPast.
I still can't find John Byers.
Will have another look tonight when I get home as no time at the moment.

Death for Jane.
-
Just found my 3x great-grandmother. Not knowing England's smaller places, can anyone tell me where her parents came from? Is this the same as Mary's baptism on page 1
Many thanks

I'm on shaky ground here, but despite what it says on that entry, I don't think there was any such parish as Hedley, Northumberland. Hedley refers to the modern Hedley on the Hill. Although it is south of the Tyne, it was part of the historic county of Northumberland and was in the parish of Ovingham (see below). So putting all of that together, yes, I think the two baptisms match.
At that time anyone from Hedley who visited the church in Ovingham (on the north bank of the river) would have travelled 4 miles to Prudhoe and taken the ferry across the river. The bridge there wasn't built until the 1880s. There is also a ford marked on old maps.
History, Topography, and Directory of Northumberland, Whellan, 1855
(from Genuki)
OVINGHAM is a parish comprising the townships of Dukeshagg. Eltringham, Harlow-hill, Hedley, Hedley-Woodside, Horsley, Mickley, Nafferton, Ovingham, Ovington, Prudhoe, Prudhoe Castle, Rouchester, Spittle, Welton, Whittle, and Wylam. It is bounded by the parishes of Stamfordham, Heddon-on-the-Wall and Bywell St. Andrew and St. Peter, except on the south-east, where it is separated from the County of Durham by the Stanley and Milkhouse Burn. It is about seven miles in length by five in breadth, and comprises an area of 15,740 acres. Its population in 1801, was 2,628; in 1811, 2,810; in 1821, 2,742; in 1831, 3,019; in 1841, 3,418; and in 1851, 3,962 souls. The parish is interesected by the river Tyne, and is beautifully diversified by gentle elevations.

Aerial view of Ovington Bridge, with Prudhoe to the south east and Ovington to the north west. The church is in the top
right left corner. The ferry followed approximately the line of the bridge, the ford was slightly upstream. It is still marked on the 1897 map even though the bridge was in operation by then:

Thanks for your help AlanBoyd. I can get an idea of the places.
Where would I find Ovington Parish Registers?
I have emailed St Cuthberts Darlington, maybe they can help with my family.

This is what is available at Durham Records Online for St Mary the Virgin, Ovingham. Italics indicate that earlier records exist but have not yet been included at DRO.
baptism: 1750 – 1870
marriage: 1813 – 1837(June)
burial: 1750 – 1840
There is also a note:"Baptisms 1768-1840 are a combination of the Bishop's Transcript and the parish register. Marriages are from the Bishop's Transcript.”

Thank you. Need to wait for a new Debit Card.
