Title: Sterret Family Port Glasgow
Post by: davidst on Tuesday 08 August 23 16:58 BST (UK)
I am trying to trace my grandfathers family. My father George Sterret (on official documents there is some variation in the family surname). He was born in Serpentine Walk Greenock in 1911, his father was called Ralph and his family came from Port Glasgow. It gets complicated because when my father was very young his parents divorced and he never knew his father or that side of the family. I can find no mention of the family in Port Glasgw after about 1901, any help would be gratefully received

George's parents were Ralph Sterrett (note spelling) and Annie Stewart Bennett. They married in Greenock in 1910 (purchase some credits at ScotlandsPeople and view the entry for the marriage, which will give you the parents of Ralph and Annie and you can work backwards from that). George's birth was registered with the surname spelled as Sterret (the spelling undoubtedly chosen by the Registrar). It's possible that George's father was the 24-year-old Ralph who appeared in Port Glasgow in the 1911 Census returns where the surname was spelled Stirrett (perhaps the spelling adopted by the census enumerator - his own choice or his own interpretation of the handwriting on the household schedules).

They divorced in 1921. It looks as if it was Annie (supported by funds from the Poor Law) who brought an action against her husband. The relevant documents can be ordered for viewing on site at the National Records of  Scotland in Edinburgh (https://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/search.aspx) NRS file CS255/1780.  The file is over 100 years old and is therefore now available to be consulted.
