Title: Andrew and Jane BISSET Family
Post by: Eyesee on Wednesday 09 August 23 13:22 BST (UK)
Andrew BISSET married Jane/Jean STEWART at Rayne on 22 Nov 1835. They had 12 children, despite what some trees on Ancestry say.

William 1836-??
Archibald 1837-1906 - went to New Zealand
George 1839-1901 - went to New Zealand
Adam 1841-1919 - went to New Zealand
Gordon 1843-1866 - died unmarried
Peter 1845-?? - married Jane THOMSON 1868
Andrew 1847-1914 - married Mary THOMSON 1875
Keith 1849-1890 - died unmarried
Jane 1850-??
Alexander 1853-1935 - went to New Zealand
Thomas 1854-1917 - married Jane DUNCAN
Margaret 1858-1931 - married James DAVIDSON

Having difficulty in finding what happened to
William - was in 1841 census but not in 1851 with his parents, although could be out working.
Peter - death date? Can't find them in census. Died between 1877 and 1937. Wife Jane died in 1937 and was a widow. Peter was a tailor.
Jane - can't find her after 1861

Thanks
Ian C

You might want to check the original certificate on S P

Jane Bisset age 40 out by few years born about 1861 Insch Aberdeenshire
Occupation lodgers house keeper ?
John Robb age 10 adopted son ?
The address is 10 Broad Street Aberdeen same address as her parents

The original certificate will have the right information

Thanks Rosie. I did find that death. There was another child as well, Isabella Jane 1877-1880.

Margaret, the youngest daughter of Andrew jnr and Mary THOMSON went to Toronto. She married a chap called James DUGUID there in 1913. He was born in Auchterless so they may have known each other in Scotland. He had been in the Army in Scotland and when WW1 kicked off he re-enlisted in his old Regiment, but was KIA in France in October 1914. She never remarried and died in Ontario in 1965. Her oldest sister Mary Ann BISSETT went to Toronto in 1920 and lived with Margaret. She died in Toronto in 1942.

One thing I was wondering is how the name DUGUID is pronounced. Can someone help with this please.

You might want to check this death on Scotland's People
Jane Bisset 1914 Cannongate Midlothian

Some one has a marriage certificate on Ancestry which could be a possibility going by the occupation of Jane's father Andrew and both her parents being deceased.

Jane Bissett age 25 occupation domestic servant father Andrew Bissett (road surveyer )
Mother Janet ? Bisset maiden name Stewart both parents deceased
Jane married Joseph Mackay age 24 ( road contractors clerk )
16 April 1878 St George Edinburgh

1881 census they are at 52,High Street West Lothian
Jane McKay age 29 born Auchterless

1891/1901 her birth place is Aberdeen but on the 1911 census it's Auchterless they also have a son Gordon .
I would take a chance with the death certificate

Thanks Rosie.

That does look like it is her going on the marriage and death certs. Her age is a couple of years out but still. There is only one Jane BISSET with parents Andrew BISSET and Jane STEWART. They seem to flip between BISSET and BISSETT as well.

Thanks Rosie.

That's Joseph alright.

Can't find a birth for Gordon either, anywhere. The 1891 census has him as 9 so born 1881-82. When he married in 1913 he gave his age as 26 so 1886-87.

Went looking for a death for Gordon and found a Service Return one that he died in 1915 in France/Belgium in WW1. His age there is 32 so birth of 1882-1883. He was in the Gordon Highlanders which on the daughter's birth cert as well.

There is an entry for him on the Commonwealth War Graves database, that confirms things.
