Title: Martin of Tipton
Post by: angel~eyes on Sunday 20 August 23 08:37 BST (UK)
There is nothing like taking the wrong branch in a tree and ending up in the 1500s for 25+ years. I'm totally devastated that this has happened to me. Mainly because someone gave me a MC of the parents of my Great Grandparents or so I thought. My Dad passed away during the pandemic and I'm trying to put his tree into a memory book.

Please can you help I'm looking for the marriage of John Edward Martin b 1872 in Tipton to Ellen Goodman possibly around 1892 (going on info from 1911 census) I know they lived in the St John's area of Dudley later on but unsure where they married.

Also the marriage of William Martin b 1828 Tipton and Ann Armstrong b 1833 (she gives various places mainly Shropshire) they would have got married early 1850s or possibly before, I believe that if its the right John Edward he was their youngest child.

Thank you in advance all help is much appreciated x

Thank you yes her father was Benjamin so this is correct. I have 2 possible fathers for John Edward - the one I have researched John b 1843 and the new possible William b 1828. The reason I'm now doubting is he was always known in the family as John Edward and he had a son , grandsons, great grandsons all called John Edward. The reason I had researched John was because I had been given a marriage cert for his father John so had looked for MMN. I  am usually on these things but this was overlooked x

Given the gap in children could William have married twice?

Thank you Trish this is really helpful. I have looked on GRO all births MMN Armstrong- I really feel this is the right path. I have no DNA links at all with the other line x

As way of an update. I have managed to build a tree around William Martin and Ann Armstrong as an alternative to the other line. I have included the marriage of William to Ann Cartwright as while I was delving into Ann's past I came across an illegitimate child possible son of her neighbour Mr Cartwright. The boy later turns up in Dudley and settles down using both surnames. I later found he was a workhouse child. I then found although Ann was born in Shropshire there are 3 brothers baptised in Old Swinford and settled in the Stourbridge/Dudley area. All names including her fathers are names my James Edward gave her children. Has I had added them to my main tree I was delighted that four further generations back and 2 DNA matches on both lines. So the only key to the puzzle is John Edward's marriage to Ellen Goodman as this should reveal his father's name.
One other point to note is my Grandad gave William as his father's name when he married my Nan.
