Title: St Helena Marriage
Post by: Bunbury125 on Monday 04 September 23 13:52 BST (UK)
Does anyone know how I go about tracing a marriage in St Helena.
Mitchel Reid (Royal Engineers ) married Mary Keily on St Helena on 3rd June 1866.
I got This information from the birth of 2 of their children who were registered at at Garrioch Barracks Maryhill.
I have looked on the NA site and FindMyPast and found  no details any advice on where to try next will be appreciated.

Regards
B

You can order a certificate from the GRO - choose overseas marriages.

GRO Chaplains Returns Marriages:

Mitchell I Reid St Helena 1860-67 page 263
Mary Kirby St Helena 1860-67 page 263

Just adding to Shaun's post these indexes are on FindMyPast.  It always takes me ages to locate the data set when I need them so I would normally google overseas marriages FindMyPast  :)

The record set on FindMyPast is "British Armed Forces and Overseas Banns and Marriages".  I usually go to "All record sets" and type "armed" in the search box.

I couldn't find it earlier but I see it now. 12+ pages. Wife's maiden name recorded as Keilie.

The marriage is also in the Friends of St Helena database (Mitchell James Reid) but you need to subscribe to see the detail:

The St Helena parish registers have been digitised by Witwatersrand University (Historical Papers Research Archive) – free access.

There’s a Garrison Church, as well as several parishes (St James, St John, St Paul etc.). The registers aren’t searchable by name. You have to browse the images for each parish and look for the marriage date.

  Hi ,
Yes, he was the son of Robert Reid and Katherine Sutherland and he was born in Edinburgh. He had 4 siblings. Robert,Walter, James and John. John died young. Robert Junior stayed in Edinburgh but the rest moved south to England.

Thanks for this, the writing is hard to read sometimes but it's fascinating.
