Title: Parents of Matthew DREW, early 18th century
Post by: garlands on Monday 16 October 23 12:23 BST (UK)
Matthew DREW was bap by Thomas & Elizabeth DREW on 03 Apr 1720 in Thornbury.

The only marriage of a Thomas DREW & Elizabeth XXXX I can find is:-

21 Aug 1712 Thomas DREW m Elizabeth WOOD in Bromyard - both of Thornbury

That would appear to settle the matter. Unfortunately, there are some flies in the ointment!
In total, there are 15 baptisms attributed to this couple, some in Bromyard, some in Thornbury, and TWO of these occur before the marriage date. What we have is:-

                            Bromyard                Thornbury

03 Mar 1710          Thomas
10 Jan 1712                                           Thomas
15 Jan 1714                                            Francis
19 Apr 1715            Anne
01 Aug 1717       John & Thomas
26 Sep 1717                                         Elizabeth
03 Mar 1719           Thomas
01 Aug 1719            John
03 Apr 1720                                           Matthew
31 Mar 1722                                              Mary
21 Apr 1722           Elizabeth
13 Jun 1724                                            Hannah
01 Dec 1727                                           Samuel
03 Mar 1729           Thomas

How many DREW families do we have?
Where & when are the other marriages?
Who are Matthew's parents?

Any and all help will be much appreciated

George

They were both of Thornbury when married so the Thornbury baptisms would be attributed to them.

Did they marry by license?
I can only see a transcription, otherwise you would normally marry in your own village.

ADDED
The Thomas baptism 10 January 1712 is this old style in which case it's 1713

I'm afraid that, like you, I've only been able to access a transcription. I'm hoping someone might have access to the original.

Bromyard & Thornbury can be seen on map so within travelling distance?

Bromyard, Herefordshire is 7 miles (12 Km) N of Bosbury, Herefordshire.  Thornbury, Herefordshire is 11 miles (18 Km) NW of Bosbury, Herefordshire
This is measured directly between the two points 'as the crow flies' ignoring any geographical features such as rivers or hills.

Thanks. I'd seen that one, but it still leaves the 2 pre-nuptial baptisms un-explained, and did they subsequently end up living in Bromyard or Thornbury?

They appear to have had 4 children, all baptized in Ashperton, although the mother's name is given as Sarah. Is that likely?

In the period 1710 - 30, there are 5 'Thomas DREW' baptisms, with parents Thomas & Elizabeth, divided between Bromyard & Thornbury, but no burials. Does this imply 5 separate families? If so, where are the relevant marriages? If not, ditto burials?

Baptismal dates mean that there must have been at least 2 mothers so, presumably, 2 or more marriages. I've looked on FindMyPast, FreeReg & FamilySearch without success. Is it me, or are there records missing?

My comment concerning the Bospury marriage is WRONG. I have just come across:-

03 Apr 1700  Thomas DREW m Sarah BAGGARD in Hereford Cathedral  (Groom of Woolhope, Bride of Ashperton)

so the Ashperton baptisms must be of this couple's children. My apologies. This brings the Bospury marriage back into focus, although there remains the problem of the 1710 and 1712 baptisms.

What about this? Timing is perfect; distance is ????

06 Dec 1708  Thomas DREW    m    Elizabeth HEATH    in   Lydiard Tregoze, Wilts
                      of Yatesbury               of Swindon

I cannot find any issue from this marriage anywhere near, neither can I find the burial of either party, so, did they move to Bromyard?

In the period 1700-10, the only other marriages, in England, between a Thomas DREW and an Elizabeth XXXX are in Middlesex (1701/2) and Yorkshire (1703). I believe that these are too early and too distant and can safely be ignored. Therefore, the one cited earlier must be of the parents of the infants baptizes in 1710 and 1712. Unfortunately, that still doesn't clarify which couple baptized Matthew in 1720!

Knowing that Matthew's parents were either:-

06 Dec 1708  Thomas DREW m Elizabeth HEATH

                             or

21 Aug 1712  Thomas DREW m Elizabeth WOOD in Bromyard

I've been looking for a 'name' link with grandparents and, apart from the obvious 'Thomas' and Elizabeth, I've found:-

??.??.1686  bap of Elizabeth  to  Matthew & Elizabeth WOOD in Wacton

In the complete absence of any other instances of the name 'Matthew', I believe that these must be the parents I've been seeking, so my thanks to everyone who has contributed to the search.

I don't know why the day and month are missing from the transcript, but if anyone can provide them I should be most grateful.
