Title: Middleton Buildings,Marylebone, Middx
Post by: R.Hammans on Sunday 17 December 23 21:45 GMT (UK)
I have a possible location address for someone I'm researching, it's in the subject line of this post.
Is there any way I can find out: a) where it might have been; and b) who actually lived there around 1872 ?
The name it's in relation to is Edward Lower Eliot (one 'T'), possibly born in Cornwall.

Also, has anyone ever come across the name 'Lower' as a second name in any of their research?

Thanks.

Can’t help with the address but he was born 1841 Liskeard  & married 1866 to Elizabeth Prideaux Branston who was a widow

Do you already have that info?

A number of newspaper items mention Middletons Buildings as Great Portman St and Langham  St. You can see it here on this map:

(you'll have to move the map a bit to the right - I'll try to get a better map reference)

Middleton's Buildings can be found on the 1871 census:
RG10/151/30 pg 53 -60

From a quick look, I can't see any ELIOT(T)s there in 1871.

Modified to add:

Looks like Edward Lower ELIOT is at 334 Bethnal Green Rd in 1871
RG10/491 pg 18

Many thanks for that info maddys52 and CaroleW, all useful and helps clarify some details about my great-grandfather Edward Lower Elliot. I had his mother down as Mary Anne Quilliam, although not sure where this came from - I am sorting out the family tree started by my brother and finding quite a few inconsistencies!
May I ask where you found his mother as being of surname Lower?

The maps are great, didn't know of their existence previously and the location of Middleton Buildings is now clear. I have a census reference to members of the family in 1881 living at 3 Riding House Street, which I note Middleton Buildings are adjacent to, so part of the mystery solved!

Thanks hanes, I'd just spent an hour or so looking for that marriage, without luck! I don't have a FindMyPast subscription though so much appreciate your assistance. Also the reference in the '51 census.

You can see the marriage register on FamilySearch - FREE but you need to register.

Added - the family can be found on the '41 Census quite readily tho' too early for Edward

Correction - Ed is there!

Ref your reply 6.  Mothers maiden names on births before mid 1911 can be found using GRO online.  You can use freebmd to check for a birth registration

www.freebmd.org.uk

To use GRO online you have to register & create a login/password which is free & it is also free to use.

Thanks again Hanes. I tried searching Ancestry for 'Ellert' on the 1861 census, without luck
How do I search for page you referenced please?

Of course, it may have been ttanscribed as "Elliot/t" with ANC and I'm not familiar enough with Ancestry to advise how to search under Census reference.

But can you search Anc by location only plus place of birth?. I searched FindMyPast by entering location as"Liskeard" and Place of birth as "Barking" - nothing else. There are not many living in Liskeard in 1861 and born in Barking. But Ed's mother Mary is!

Alternatively, search for Thomas (no last name), born 1808 (exact year), place of birth Liskeard, occupation cooper.

Else a better qualified Rootschatter is certain to answer your call about searching under reference.

Added - problem solved!!

To search using piece/folio/page number on Ancestry - on the search page omit any entry for name etc & just go to bottom half of the page & complete the relevant boxes
