I stayed up till midnight, went to the front door to greet my neighbour, was really surprised  how quiet it was, next door the other way all the lights were on,  all  cars outside but not a peep from them , they are usually the family who come out all guns blazing with pots, pans and wooden spoons, only one other family out further down, plenty of fireworks  but not for long, very quiet indeed.

Yes Mowsehowse  let's hope everyone has a healthy and happy new year.

There was about 10 minutes of fireworks around Torbay, but I didn't hear any carousing after that, only an owl hooting quite a lot.  :)

My brother  in Teignmouth seemed to be having a happy party in the lounge in their complex, he organises most social things that go on but as like most of the places some choose not to socialise,  not for everyone. LM

I think people really do need people LM, so it is a good thing your brother makes opportunities for the residents to socialise.

My brother is good at organising  things, he is a bit like the soul of the party.

Just read this for a  greeting, at anytime I suppose

" may your troubles be less and your blessings be more"

I was tired, I went to bed and listened on the radio, I didn’t think I would stay awake, but just managed it.

For the first time there was no sound of any fireworks around here, usually they go on for quite a while. I think the weather put a lot of people off.

When we lived abroad it was always a double event, we celebrated both local and UK time. :) :) :)

Happy New Year to all. LM I like your quote of ‘May your troubles be less and your blessings be more.

I ended up staying up as I’d started to rewatch season 12 of Call the Midwife ready for the new season starting next week. The fireworks from London on tv were huge and they had a couple of laser bits included. Must have cost a lot of money.
Near us we could hear some fireworks for about ten minutes but no idea where they were from.

We stayed up just to see the new year in and kept awake by watching "Jule's Hootenanny".  Big mistake, as he wheeled out performers who had been popular some 50 years ago  - Rod Stewart fronting a trio of leggy blondes and trying to dance, Paul Jones from Manfred Mann wavering his way through one of his old songs.  Oh dear, it really made us feel our age as we watched pop stars from our youth now wrinkly and wobbly.

There was an short burst of fireworks, probably from a nearby hotel, and then we made a dash for our bed. where the electric blanket was waiting to greet us.  The village is rather quiet this morning and we have no plans to do anything energetic.  My daughter tells me she has been for a run, stood on the grass in bare feet and had a cold shower - all part of her usual routine - and will soon be going out for a long walk with her family.  Oh, to be young and energetic!  My son is working, as usual.

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and peaceful year. :D :D

We stayed up, and there were very noisy fireworks in the area, wet underfoot but not actually raining. Best wishes to all for 2024 - and as I mentioned on previous thread, my decorations will descend on 5th January. Always have done so they're down for 12th night.

Happy New Year to all!

We had a delicious dinner with friends eeking out four courses until nearly midnight… like Gillg we watched Jouls Holland… oh dear I’m afraid I agree with aging pop stars… to think I used to think Paul Jones wonderful! I was staggered to read he’s 81 so maybe he wasn’t doing so badly…

The fireworks on the Thames were very good we thought… by the time we got to bed it was gone 1.30 pm so not an early start this morning… who thought four people could use so many glasses over a meal 😂😂.

The weather started off sunny this morning but now it’s battering down with rain, we don’t really need anymore… my poor Son and D-in-law seem to have a river running through part of their property again despite all the drainage and culverts they’ve installed.. but not helped by the local council not doing their bit to maintain them! They live in Birkdale, Qld…

Take care everyone and hope 2024 is a better year for all.

I flew home this morning - made plenty of use of the Passenger Assistance at both airports ;)

Slight change in dining - Christmas Day was venison; New Year's Eve was reindeer. Both very tasty!
Boxing Day was at son-in-laws parents, and his family (15 of us!). Lamb, turkey and gammon.
Only 1 bottle of wine on the table - all for me :D

The porter was puffing and panting!
Bristol airport has lots of steps and ramps.
Fast tracked through security; bypassed the Duty Free shopping, too. :D

I don't drink much but red wine doesn't seem to agree with me, so if I do have a drink it has to be white or rosè.   LM

Received 2 late Christmas cards today, one from the USA and one with no postmarking but just a stroke of a pen across the stamp.  Just as I was thinking that it was time to take down my decorations.

Last night went to the birthday party of a German friend who was also celebrating a New Year's visit from her parents.  The mother had made Glühwein, the real stuff, not the bottles you can buy readymade in Tesco.  It was delicious!  The recipe included orange and lemon peel, red grape juice, various herbs and spices and of course red wine.  Not for you, LM, though! :( :(

Today is another dark, damp day and we are threatened with a yellow rain warning later in the day.  Will it ever stop?

How lovely Gillg… authentic gluhwein is delicious… I don’t drink red wine either but I do like a glass or two of the spiced winter heaven especially on the ski slopes.

Caroline

Lovely sunny day here at the moment!

" Ice wine" - really sweet, from frost-bitten grapes, is my choice to bring in a new year nowadays. First met it from Austria, now delight in it from Canada. It's become a tradition for us - normally I'm a red wine person, or an Aperol spritz, but the Pelletier vineyard seems to do a lovely job.

In Tesco this morning ,it was so funny, two little boys quite a long way away from their Daddy.
The older one about four was plaguing the smaller who was about 18 months and who had a dummy in his mouth.
Every so often the little one would take out his dummy and shout” BOGOFF”
to his brother, I was smiling and Daddy came to gather them up and I remarked they were like a double act ,he said that they were inseparable but did not really get on and yet were always together.
I made no comment about what the little one was saying.

Saw a lovely Art Deco mirror in a charity shop window ,asked the price and - can’t believe it £10— absolutely new.
I reserved it and when I got home told my son who had a day or so ago seen it but the shop was closed .
He really likes it so I phoned to confirm and can pay tomorrow after Church .
He will have to collect it though when he can.
It matches some wall lights he has installed .

Just sorted out my daily medications for a fortnight.
Have little strip containers one compartment for each drug unless I take two together ,but I can see if I have forgotten one.

My little friend has just come in a panic re a postal package so I need to deal with this.
Cheerio
Viktoria.

I am not a Tesco shopper normally but was in the area this week   bought a very nice zip up top , bit like thin fleece to short so I had to take it back today  actually went straight up to a manned till, the  cashier said it was a very quiet day  the self service tills were busy.

Because my bus wasn't due for another  50 mins I went to have a coffee, spied a Worcester 4 piece  set  of cups and saucers as I passed the charity shop, unused for £5,  I will  be out to impress  whoever I need to Impress, pity there wasn't any small plates but will look around  for them.

It is very cold today, I am in now  for the afternoon.
.
Liked  the story of the little boys , you did well, with your bargain Viktoria.

I sort out  my medication for a fortnight, then I know I haven't missed any.

Keep warm

A rather belated Happy New Year wish to everyone. Just back from a post Christmas week somewhere a little warmer than here.  :) So I had a rather different New Year's Eve and the new year arrived a few hours earlier! Enjoyed having a few hours extra daylight, must keep reminding myself that the longer days are on the way.

Very best wishes to everyone for good health and happiness.

BB, It was southern Turkey. It wasn't sunshine all the way, we had a couple of very wet days (just to remind us of home!) but the other days made up for it. Lovely to feel the warm sun on your skin in January.  :)

I think you're right Candleflame, it didn't seem to get dark quite so early tonight.

MH, that's music to my ears!

Happy New Year..
Wonderfull Roobarb! I can’t think of a better way to spend it… sunshine certainly appeals at this time of the year when all we seem to be getting dull miserable days… although I did spot a bit of blue sky for a millisecond earlier on 😂😂.

All decorations taken down and now back up in the loft for another year… I have to say climbing the ladder and pulling myself up doesn’t get any easier..

Back to Pilates on Monday and I can’t wait… I have missed it, I did think I’d do some at home but never seem to find the right time..

I’m certainly looking forward to our trip to Turkey in April and a ballon trip which has been on my wish list for a long time when we go up to Cappadocia… OH will be on terra firma as it would be his worst nightmare!

Been up in hot air balloons several times, mostly years back, in Britain, always wanted to, and when I finally got up, really loved the experience, each time, Caw1. One trip was over snow-covered north Yorkshire. Really good. Enjoy it.

Sounds wonderful TY… I’m sure snow covered hill tops looked really magical…can't wait to see the landscape especially as I think it’s pretty spectacular… nearly went up when we stayed with friends in Kenya years ago.

Not a country we’ve ever visited but looking fed to it…

thinking about some winter sun at the moment either end Jan or mid Feb… if anyones got some suggestions if they’ve been anywhere nice I’d love to hear ideas… not more than 4 hr flight though…

I think you'll struggle with that Caroline. I'd say your best bet is the Canary Islands but they're about a four and a half hour flight. The earliest in the year that I've been there is March, lovely warm weather then, I think it's cooler in January and February. I've been to Lanzarote a few times, it does get some windy weather, Gran Canaria might be best for more settled weather.

Other than that, Cyprus is apparently quite mild but a bit cooler I think. I've never been there in the winter months. That's also about a four and a half hour flight.
If you could manage about six hours flying time then Cape Verde is a possibility.

Thanks Roobarb for your advice… no nearer to making any decisions yet!
Suddenly seem to have things crop up in January so probably not an option for this month now as not enough time in between!
Will look for Feb but avoiding half term!
