Title: Meyer family
Post by: fletch001 on Tuesday 09 January 24 13:26 GMT (UK)
Hi All,
I am researching the Meyer family in Canada.
The person who i know for definate is Alfred John Meyer born 19 April 1926 in Young, Saskatchewen and died 11 Nov 2005 in Regina Saskatchewen. I am trying to find his father, a Philip Meyer, might have hailed from Germany/Russia and Philips wifes name and where they married. i require DoB, DoD and where they lived and originally came from if possible. A big ask but i am hoping someone may be able to help.
Many thanks for all your time and effort
Kind Regards
Mike Fletcher

Hi,

From Find A Grave, Regina Saskatchewan with photo and obit for Alfred. The obit gives his parents as Philip Meyer and Elizabeth Lindgren. **Note, Alfred's siblings are listed with the last name Lindgren.

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/100175419/alfred-john-meyer

Saskatchewan is a difficult province to research in, they like to keep their records very close to
their chest  ???. 100 yrs. for births, 70 for deaths, and marriages are still unavailable (and have been that way for years).

Hi,

You may have this, from the Leader Post newspaper, Jan. 28, 1949, page 5, the wedding announcement for Alfred, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. Meyer, of Young, Sask. and Bernice Hazel Barnholden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Barnholden of Moose Jaw, Sask. married Jan. 19, 1949.

If I have found the right one, parents of Elizabeth Mayer/Lindgren were Lawrence Koslowski (born Poland) and Frieda Opalka, (born Berlin) per her death registration.
https://search-collections.royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/Image/Genealogy/6d994fc5-c1c0-443b-81f6-8b8b5cd84bae

Lawrence and Frieda:  https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/175199282/lawrence-koslowski
They are easy enough to find on the 1916, 1921, and 1931, but oddly enough, Elizabeth is never shown with them.  I would have thought she should show on at least the 1916?

Her husband Philip was a Mayer; son Alfred John, who went by Meyer, had his surname (and his family) legally changed to Meyer in 1969.
https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-leader-post-aj-meyer-name-change/138431111/

Incidentally, in the same area, there was another Alfred John Mayer, born a couple years before your Alfred, and dying in 2000, who also changed his name from Mayer to Meyer in the '50's.  Just mentioning him in case he is a cousin (I could not find any link between them).

The obit for Mr Lindgren makes no mention of Alfred   :(

Excellent bbart, sorry I had to dash away earlier.

Coincidence maybe and might not be the rioght one,  also noticed that Axel Lindgren (retired) and his wife Jennie lived in Rosthern Saskatchewan on he Canada Voters List 1965.  An earlier listing in 1949
Had earlier found a reference to Philip Meyer (labourer) living Young Rosthearn in 1949 and 1953 ??
Wonder if Philip and Elizabeth divorced ?

Hello Sandra & Bbart,
Apologies for the slight delay in my reply, Wow, some great information here, it has really opened up the family tree prospects. Some of this information i would not have been able to find without your help. Very much appriciated, thank you. I will do some more research and start adding these names to the FT.
However, if anyone has more information, that would be great also, thank you all so far.

In the wedding announcement in the Leader Post for Alfred and his wife, out-of-town guests were noted as Mrs. E. Renner and Mrs. G. Renner of Young, Saskatchewan.   Worth checking out.

Also in the 1926 Census of the Prairie provinces, there is a Philip Myers, aged 27, with wife Louisie, aged 22, with son Albert J., aged 8 months.  Philip is German, born in Russia, immigrated 1914. Louisie is German, born in Germany, immigrated 1910. Also in the household is a Frederick Myers, aged 29, born Russia.  All of this is in the municipality of Morris (which includes Young) in the census district of Humboldt.

https://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?app=census1926&op=img&id=e011234063

In the 1931 Census, Philip seems to be living apart from his wife and child and next door to the Renners.  Says he is widowed, aged 31, born Russia, Lutheran, Manager of a Public Hotel.  This is in the Village of Semans, Census District of Last Mountain:

The Renners are Karl & Emily, aged 59 and 53. With them is an Alfred Renner, aged 5, born Saskatchewan, who is likely your Alfred incorrectly listed.

There is a local history book for Young and surrounding area available online.  Write up on a Meyer family and Renner family but don't specifically mention your group:

Incoming passenger list from Bremen to New York aboard the vessel Rhein on 26 August 1913 for an Emilie Meier, aged 35, widowed, with sons Fridrich, aged 16, and Philipp, aged 11, bound for Trome(?), Alberta, all born Germany, all Lutheran:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9T6-CR5S?i=462&cc=1368704&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AJNRD-QXS

Frederick is buried in Young (died 1958).  By the time of the 1916 census, he is in Morris, working as a farmer labourer, aged 19, born Russia, single, immigrated 1913:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KMPD-R25

Philip is also nearby noted as Philip Renner, aged 17, single, born Russia, immigrated 1914, working for the Young family, living next door to Christian and Mina Renner in Viscount.

Title: Re: Meyer family
Post by: eileenwilson on Friday 12 January 24 00:45 GMT (UK)
I think the mother Emilie shows up as Amelia Renner, also in Humboldt (Quill Lake), in 1916, aged 37, born Russia, with new husband, Carl Renner. She emigrated in 1914 and he emigrated in 1905 with two children, now aged 16 and 12. Younger children aged 9, 7, 4 all born in Saskatchewan, and likely from Carl's first marriage.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-DCRS-LKD?view=index&personArk=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AKMPD-PW6&action=view

In the 1926 Census, she is in Morris with husband.   In 1931, she is the Emily Renner who is living next door to her son Philip. I had included the link in a previous post.

In Carl Renner's obit, it indicated that the family had moved briefly to California around 1922 returning a year or so later.  There is a border crossing record in 1921 for Amelia Renner, aged 42, born Odessa, Russia, last permanent residence given as Young, Saskatchewan, having immigrated aboard the SS Rhine into New York in August 1913.

Thank you, a lot of information to look at which will take time to go through.

All,
The information i have from my Cousin is that Alfred John Meyers father was Philip Mayer/Meyer abt 1899 Russia to 1979 died Drumheller, Alberta, his wife was Elizabeth Anne Koslowski 1903 Germany to 1991 Vernan BC.

The question is was Elizabeth, Philips second wife, if the census records you have sent states his wife was Louisa?

Trying not to get too confused.

Any help would be grately appriciated, thank you all.

Hi Sandra,
Thank you for the new information, all new to me, thank you. Regarding John Carl Barnholden as we know him, appently he stowed away on his Uncle's ship and landed in San Francisco in the early 1900's. He moved up to Canada as conscription started for WWI but joined the Canadian army. I think he would have landed using his original surname Witt.

He's going to be very young travelling on his own, early 1900's. There was the San Francisco earthquake in 1906 which destroyed all birth and immigration records.

When did he change his name ?

Do you know the ship name ?

According to my Cousin he stowed away on his Uncles ship when he was 15 yrs old and was in San Francisco when the earthquake happened in 1906. I have found his Canadian army attestation papers and it looks like he had already changed his name to what we know him as.

His WWI service record is available here:

https://recherche-collection-search.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/Home/Search?DataSource=Genealogy|Military|PfFww&LastName=barnholden&

Gives his father Carl in Denmark as next of kin and then lists his brother Edumond, also of Denmark.  Says his father is alive, but his mother (unnamed) is deceased.   In his will, he leaves everything to his father Carl L. Barnholden in Denmark.  In 1918, he indicates both his parents are deceased and he names his brother Edmond as his next of kin.
