Florence McLACHLAN died in Windsor, Victoria in 1946, parents Henry HANLON and Sarah QUINN (5896 / 1946)
-
I can't see a marriage yet, however Henry's death notice says he died at his daughter's house in Windsor

A nice life history - on the occasion of Henry and Sarah's 60th wedding anniversary

Death and funeral notice for Florence:
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/206106936?searchTerm=%22florence%20mclachlan%22
(death notice - 1st column, near the bottom) - wife of John McLACHLAN.
According to electoral rolls, John McLACHLAN was a shipwright.
-
The address seems to be Gladsone Street South Yarra, which is not exactly Windsor.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/201638814?searchTerm=%22hanlon%20windsor%22~12
In 1936 ( electoral roll) Florence Mclachlan was at 1 Gladstone Ave South Yarra with John McLachlan, a shipwright.

They were at that address from at least Nov 1929 - a funeral notice for Florence's nephew, Walter James CARRAHER

Thank you so much to everyone, I had just about given up on finding anything for Florence, being told she never married I kept searching Hanlon....
Thank you all again, very much appreciated.

Strange that I can't find a marriage, will keep looking. I'm guessing from the death notice they did not have children, certainly couldn't see any that looked likely on the Victorian BDM up to the limits of privacy laws (100 years - ie c1923)

Hi Cienna,
I think you can bring the jury in ;D.
James Brown McLachlan married in NSW
James B MacLachlan
Edith R SMITH
1931 Glebe,
12497
They were in Melbourne by 1936 living at 249 High St. St kilda. James was a labourer
After the death of her husband, (Already given) Edith Rosa remarried.
POULTER Harold John
MCLACHLAN, Edith Rosa
1962.
They lived around Ferntree Gully where he was a store keeper.
She died in 1991
Here is her death notice.
Note the names of her children.
https://www.weeklytimesnow.com.au/tributes/notice/death-notices/poulter-edith-rosa/3375075/
So, James Brown McLachlan was a son from a previous marriage of John (Jock) McLachlan.

Thank you sparrett, it only takes one inquiry and bingo....there are all the answers and more, I thought I was at a loose end, thank you to all at Rootschat for their help.

For interest:
James Brown McLACHLAN born 1901 Greenock West (564 / 2 / 287) mmn McNEIL
John McLACHLAN married Margaret B McNEILL in 1900 Greenock West (564 / 2 / 108)
-
James B MacLachlan
Edith R SMITH
1931 Glebe,
12497
The strange thing is though that on the Parish register, James says his mother's name was Margaret BROWN. :-\
James is 26, manufacturer, Glebe, born Greenock. Father - John Matthew McLACHLAN, carpenter.
There is a Margaret McNeil BROWN born 1876 in Greenock (564 / 3 / 1347) mmn STALKER.
-
Well,
I do not know what became Margaret McNeil B. McLachlan.
According to the Victorian electoral Roll, in 1912 John McLachlan was living at St James Lane, South Melbourne. A shipwright.
No others of the surname with him.
Possibly Margaret had chosen not to register to vote or not any longer with him.
In 1914 he is with Florence (who is registered to vote as Florrie) at 5 Haseldene Place, South Yarra.
Occ,-A shipwirht and HD.

There are a number of deaths in Greenock that could be Margaret. I had a quick look for an immigration for John and James, tricky as such common names. Will have another look.
-
Thank you everyone for your help, I have been given a contact with the same fmaily, I appreciate the help each person has given me....
Kind Regards

Challenging for a widowed man to immigrate to Australia from Scotland with a young boy.
If John was registered to vote in Melbourne in 1912, the boy would be no older than 10 or 11 years at that time.
This makes me think they may have come as a family unit and she left/died/ after so that he is seen with "Florrie" by 1914.
Noting that when John Brown McLachlan married in NSW, on the Parish Register he has taken a couple of years off his true age. He was actually closer to 30 than 26. His bride 18 years.
Sue
ADDING further observations.
James Brown McLACHLAN, a labourer, lives at his father's 1 Gladstone St. address in 1927 and 1931, the same year as his marriage. His marriage certificate, as noted states he is a manufacturer, so another porky :D
Noteworthy or not?...the certificate also show that Edith's father is deceased by the note "deceased" next to it .
There is no such note beside James' mother's name.

I meant to add yesterday this item from trove - a Florrie HANLON in trouble for "assaulting" her niece Rene CARR in 1904 in South Melbourne. I wondered if this was supposed to be Irene CARRAHER? It may be someone else entirely. :-\
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/10317536?searchTerm=%22florrie%20hanlon%22
-
Another article from Brisbane in 1909 about someone who called herself "Florrie HANLON", had previously been in trouble in Melbourne, and now in trouble in Brisbane as "Florence TOBOLKA".
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/19588047
However, this is not "your" Florrie HANLON, as Florence and Franz TOBOLKA (mentioned in the above article) are in Brisbane in later electoral rolls when Florrie McLACHLAN is in Melbourne.
-
Oh goodness, that's not good, I am not sure where Rene may fit in, I will have to do some more research....to see if she may be the Florrie.
Thank you maddys52.
Regards
Cienna.

An on-line tree suggests that Sarah Jane Hanlon is one of 10 children (all apparently born in Hobart) of Henry Louie Hanlon and Sarah Quinn and Florence Hanlon is her sister. Sarah Jane married James Carraher in 1886. Their first child was Irene Mary Carraher.
Electoral Roll 1903
James Carraher, seaman labourer and Sarah Jane Elizabeth Carraher home duties, at 106 Cobden St South Melbourne
So, putting two and two together it seems likely that the newspaper report of the altercation may well be correct.

And Irene's brother Walter James CARRAHER died at Florence's place in 1929 see reply #5, which is why I thought the "assault" story may be related. However, there is a Rene CARR also mentioned in Melbourne around this time too. :-\
-
Very confusing family, I have been researching Florence (Florrie) and maybe just maybe she could be the Florrie whom assaulted her niece Irene, will look into a bit sure before adding the info.
I have come across a few of the CARRAHER family changing their name to CARR, this where I became very confused with the CARR name coming up.
Going back to Margaret, I too have been unable to find what happened to her, if she left and remarried then it will be hard to find her having a new surname....
Thank you everyone for your info.
Regards
Cienna.

A mother leaving her husband AND child is less usual than just a wife leaving a husband.
James Brown McLachlan was only 10 years old when we find John the shipwright as the only registered voter of the surname McLachlan in 1912, South Melbourne.
Questions,
Where was little James at that time ?
Was Florence possibly 'the other woman"?
Did she become "mum" to the boy?
We have not located a marriage for Florence and John.
Is that because John was still married the living Margaret?
Sue
-
James CARRAHER married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Sarah HANLON, there is no Sarah Jane on the family I am helping....they have Elizabeth Sarah marrying the said Jams CARRAHER.
They married... 28 Oct 1882, S.S. St. Peter and Paul's Church, South Melbourne, Victoria
They are said to have had 14 children, losing a few in early childhood.

Oops - Sorry my transcription in Reply #22 was incorrect. I've amended it in the original post and re-posted here
Electoral Roll 1903
James Carraher, seaman labourer and Sarah Jane Elizabeth Carraher home duties, at 106 Cobden St South Melbourne
In the same ER two other people with Carraher surname in South Melbourne
Edward Carraher, seaman, listed as being at 112 Hope St
Margaret Carraher, home duties at 112 Tope St
I can't see a "Hope St, South Melbourne" but there's a "Tope St' and 112 is a small,single-fronted bungalow which may well have been built by 1903.
Edward Carraher had married Margaret Walsh in 1894 Vic Reg no: 5860
Judith
-
Irene CARRAHER whose birth I cannot locate so far, married in 1915 in Vic
HILL Hy Wm
CARRAHER, Irene
1915
3890/1915.
I find it a bit odd that in the Death Notice of John McLACHLAN (shipwright) she is mentioned as HIS neice..thus....
"Uncle of Irene HILL."
Florence, to whom he was seemingly not married was Irene's aunt. Seems a bit of stretch to mention the rather indirect relationship.
Her death suggest birthdate of 1891
HILL Irene Mary
Sarah Elizabeth HANLON
James CARABER
Windsor
Aged 89
1980
25564/1980

Mother: Elizth HANLON
Father: Jas

Yes, that would be it ;D

Interesting (but not significant! - probably ??? ::) that her father's surname is spelt the same way on her birth and death certificates while the usual usage seems to be different.

This appears to be James McLachlan on passenger lists.
