Title: Urania Burnett
Post by: m23to53 on Thursday 11 April 24 13:40 BST (UK)
Born Barbados 1864, her birth record is the only one I can find. As the only visible possibility I can find, I need to know if she became the Urania Burnett Sunderland living c1901 of no known location I can find. No trace on Ancestry/Family Search etc.
Any way to trace her further ?

Thanks
John

Where have you found  Urania Burnett Sunderland?
The birth record gives Urania's mother as Anna Maria, no father mentioned. Have you traced the mother at all?

Source of the full name, unseen by me, was 'Wright's Chronological Bibliography of English Language Fiction in the Library of Congress through 1950 (Boston: G. K. Hall, 1974)'. Author is listed in the unknown nationalities section, nothing else known except her book, under a pseudonym, was published 1901 -
"Penelope Dalrymple
rn: Urania Burnett Sunderland. "That Wager of Dot's." Abbey
(NYC), 1901"

Must admit I am asssuming she was West Indian as the apparent only appearance of a possible maiden name is in records relating to the area.

Regards
John

Looking at Familysearch, there are quite a number of children baptised to Anna Maria Burnett in Barbados, before and after Urania. Might not all be the children of the same Anna Maria of course, but there are no overlaps and intervals between them seem consistent with being the same mother. Unless Anna Maria had several men friends, it could indicate she was in a long term relationship with one man, whom she could not marry. One child has a second forename Delaney.

Indianapolis Journal, Volume 51, Number 322,Indianapolis, Marion County, 18 November 1901

has a list of recently published books including:
"The Wager of Dots," a story of American life, by Penelope Dalrymple.
Penelope aka Urania must have had experience of life in America.
Can't work out the significance of the title though

Where does she fit into your FH?  Are you descended from one of her children or siblings?
