Post by: smithkei on Sunday 21 April 24 12:00 BST (UK)
Im trying again with this which is probably the biggest dead end in my tree. She was my 2nd Great Grandmother and emigrated to Toronto in 1871. Ive attached an excel with what I know about her. What I never found is a birth record or firm details of her father or mother. Any help greatly appreciated

Wiki tree says Jane Elizabeth(Setter) Mackmin was born at sea ?

You would probably need to know an area where she might have been born and check Church records.

The 1869 Act brought the beginning of a new method of registration that was to be province wide and include the registration of all births, marriages and deaths.

The death certificate says born 1 st March 1849 England

Death notices may be of interest if you haven't come across it.

The Toronto Star obituary is in the spreadsheet. Believe me I  looked high and low in UK parish and GRO for her birth in 1849. The closest is Totnes but it doesn’t match with later census and there is a marriage for the same name there later.

Sorry don't open spreadsheets from unknown sources.

Repeating from reply 1 - You would probably need to know an area where she might have been born and check Church records.

Information for others searching.......

Your ancestry tree is showing a Joseph Setter who appears to be a Corporal (Service Number 3159) in the Cold Stream Regiment of Foot Guards. London and Windsor 1851. Died Bulgaria 21 October 1854.  Possible the regiment could have been in Canada in the 1840's - have you explored that angle.

Marriage certificate shows father Joseph - soldier - deceased.

Apart from 2nd Battalion's brief stint garrisoning Canada in 1839, the Coldstream Guards remained on home duties and did not serve overseas until the Crimean War (1854-56). There, the 1st Battalion fought at the battles of Alma (1854), Inkerman (1854) and Sevastopol (1855).

There is a death of Joseph Setter at Varna Bulgaria during the Crimean War. Varna was a hospital point for troops and there was an outbreak of cholera there. Theres no proof its her father apart from he was a deceased soldier on her marriage cert. Yet on a Canada census he was Italian. On another English.

What I really need is her birth record......

I have her immigration to Canada 1871, its in the spreadsheet. She came with husband and daughter

If her father came from a family of soldiers, being born in Italy might make sense.  I do find it interesting that the death record only names the mother as Jane Setter.  If she was a British subject born abroad and registered, the birth should appear at the GRO.  Also, if Joseph was stationed in the UK in 1851 (worldwide index 1851 census), then Jane should be somewhere in the UK as well.  There  won't be any additional records in Canada that you haven't already found.

Thanks I appreciate your efforts. Acc to National Archives the registration of those deaths was kept locally and never reported back to GRO in the UK. There is however all the pertinent info on the local certificate.  I suspect the informant was her husband Alfred who simply did not know who her father was and had probably forgotten the entry on the marriage cert 50 years before.
