Title: Marriage Robert Johnston, 1866, Dublin
Post by: Peggy13 on Sunday 28 April 24 04:36 BST (UK)
I have found a marriage of Robert Johnston to Rebecca Robinson in 1866 in the city of Dublin. But I can’t read where each person is from as the writing is so faded.
Can anyone help me with the writing? Robert was a widower in 1866 and he had a son Edward Robinson Johnston, 1874 to 1878 who married Martha Russell Wilkinson in Glasgow in 1917 before emigration to Illinois. Son Edward and Martha were on the 1930 and 1940 censuses in Illinois.

Thank you so very, very much, Neale1961 and Sinann. That writing had me stumped. I presume 4 Hamilton Row is in Dublin.
I also couldn't make out the parish of St.Mark.

Thanks KG. I read the article on Wikipedia about the village of Ballyfarnon. Very interesting article about a historical village.
I spent some time last night trying to find Robert’s first wife, but it may have been before 1845.

There is a Mary Johnston death in Boyle second quarter of 1864 aged 24 could be her. Not imaged.

You are amazing, dublin1850. Thank you so much. Despite the difference in occupation for Robert’s father between marriages, I feel this is likely correct. Thinking Mary died in childbirth or as a result of. She died second quarter of 1864 and Thomas is born in June 1864.
Marriage witnesses in both cases are Robinsons.

Since Robert and Rebecca Jane’s son Edward Robinson Johnston married in Glasgow in 1917, I looked for Edward in 1891 in Glasgow and found him age 17 with his remarried mother Rebecca Jane O’Grady, her husband, Patrick, and a stepbrother Michael O’Grady born in Scotland about 1884 since he was age 7. Edward had a brother James Harper Johnston, looks like age 21. So then I found the birth of James Harper Bowens Johnston in 1870  in Manorhamilton, parents Robert Johnston and Rebecca Robinson.

That means that Robert Johnston would’ve died before 1884.
Since Robert‘s first marriage was in Manorhamilton, I looked for his death there (after I checked Dublin) and I did find one of the right age using his age at his first marriage which was born abt 1838 and I did find one in 1880, age 42, but he was a hotel keeper. So is it him?

But then I found Rebecca Jane’s remarriage in Glasgow in 1882 to Patrick O’Grady. She was age 30 (impossible since son Edward was born 1873 in Manorhamilton and Rebecca was full age when she married Robert Johnston in 1866 meaning born before 1845 so Rebecca was at least 37 in 1882) from Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim, and her parents were Robert Robinson, Hotel keeper, and Susan McClure, both deceased. Rebecca’s father was Robert Robinson as per her marriage to Robert Johnston although her father was a farmer in 1866.
So I think I did find the correct death of Robert Johnston in 1880 and the correct remarriage of Rebecca Jane in 1882.

Robert’s son Edward Robinson Johnston married Martha Wilkinson in 1917 in Glasgow and they emigrated in1924 to Illinois, to join Edward’s brother William Alex. Johnston in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. I can’t find William at any time, not at birth, Not in Illinois in 1924 or later. Edward was born in Manorhamilton in 1873 and his brother James Harper Bowens Johnston was born 1870 in Manorhamilton, Ireland. Can anyone find William.?
Here is the emigration of Edward in 1924 showing his destination.
