Title: George Bowman m. Hannah (IOM) 1841-1851 - COMPLETED
Post by: Descartes46 on Wednesday 21 August 24 14:51 BST (UK)
I found out that my 3rd great grandfather George Bowman moved to the IOM to become a post office clerk at Douglas. I found this on the 1851 census records. I love how they put his place of birth as "England!" It also says on this census that he was married to a Hannah (aged 27) with three children: Ann, George & Mary. As I haven't been able to find a likely marriage on mainland UK, I was wondering if there was a marriage record for them on the IOM. George's parents were George Bowman (1790-1861) and Ann Clark (1791-1869). The marriage is likely to have taken place between 1841-1851 (sometime between the two census records).

Many thanks, D.

You can use the free people search on the iMuseum's website to find records with the name "George Bowman":
https://www.imuseum.im/search/people

Only marriage I can see between a George Bowman and Hannah is on 8th July 1845 in Braddon; bride is née 'Towlson'.

Having said that, the baptism of Ann Jane on 23rd August 1845 gives Hannah's maiden name as 'Fanenson', but I can't see an image so I don't know if that is an accurate transcription.

Thank you Queenie. I didn't realise I could search IOM records! What a great resource! :)

Looking at the 1851 entry - 5yr old daughter Ann J Bowman is shown as b Douglas

There is a christening of an Ann J Bowman on 20.7.1846 at St Peters Liverpool - parents George & Hannah - address Douglas IOM - George was a book keeper

Presumably there was a Liverpool connection

EDIT

Daughter Mary Hannah Bowman married in 1877 in Liverpool

If I have the right 1881 entry - Hannah was b Liverpool & George was b Carlisle - living in Cumberland in 1881

Hi Carole,

Yes, that's correct! Excellent. Thank you for confirming for me. Hannah and George are indeed Harold's parents. :)
