Title: Passenger list
Post by: kiwi-terrier on Sunday 01 September 24 00:56 BST (UK)
Joseph Ham Chesterfield MOYLE & his wife and 9 month old child Joseph came to NZ on the Schiehalleon in 1872  from England and landed in Wellington NZ.
Located in Napier for the Birth of 2nd son Robert John MOYLE in abt1875. He seemed to be known as Joseph MOYLE.

EDIT
Looking for when he went to Victoria Australia some stage from abt 1875 where died in 28 Jun1877 Beechworth, Hillsborough , Yackandanah, Colony of Victoria, Australia in a mining accident.

Joseph had siblings and extended family in  Victoria.

Selina and the two sons remained in NZ.

Regards
KT

Hi KT,

The Schiehalleon was one of several ships contracted by Brogden & Sons to bring navvies from the UK to New Zealand to build railway infrastructure.

Your Moyle family appear in D. Blondell's MA thesis, 'A bright eye to the main chance' which includes a passenger listing of all but two of the vessels. Look on page 150.

Hi KT,

Do you know approximately when he left NZ?

The Shipping column in contemporary newspapers often list departing passengers.

Hi Spades,
No idea when he left NZ, just going by Robert's birth year.
According to death certificate that was given to me it said 7 years in Australia, that would make him in Victoria in 1870,  not sure if correct as he did come to NZ in 1872.
The other information they put on the certificate was not married .They have the correct parents.

Sorry I do not have much information on Joseph & Selina when they 1st came to NZ.

Was one of his Victorian family members the informant on the certificate?

Have looked on Papers Past, NZSG sites etc for Shipping.
DNA matches for Joseph Edward MOYLE, none for Robert John MOYLE

SPARETT: No as an Inquest was held signature was a E D Shoebridge

That would be Edward Batten SHOEBRIDGE, mounted constable of the district.

Somebody knew his parents' names ???

Selina seems to have been involved with someone else by July 1873
A landlord  Charles Knigge had let rooms in Wellington and she shared one with a man.

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/EP18730728.2.6?items_per_page=10&query=%22knigge+moyle%22~6&snippet=true

It does not state the whereabouts of her husband.

A 5 week infant too :(

If you search RootsChat for 'charles knigge' you'll find three previous topics in NZ Completed Requests. A connection, perhaps?

Hi Sparrett,

Thanks for the extra information, I had put Selina in PP before and only got the the two notices, but for some reason that did not come up with the other the links.

The first child would be young Joseph and the baby may be Robert that would make him abt1873 than abt1875, still does not appear on BDM.

That puts here in Wellington from 1872-1873.

Strange that the husband Joseph is not mentioned, looks like I will have try and get contact with his siblings family that went to Australia and see if they know any thing.  Back into the to hard basket.

I found this information years ago
