Hi
I live in Devon and am researching Susan Birom who was born in Stratton in 1790. I know nothing about her early days although the place she was born is one of the only things that is consistent. Susan was illegitimate (in her will of 1865 aged 86 she was still described as 'a bastard'!) and didn't have an easy time later in life and I would like to find out more about her.
Does anyone recognise her name or know anything about her or her family.
Any help or advice would be great
Thanks
Alison

1841 she is living with Samuel Salter? - shoemaker and sons one is Robert - watchmaker
1851 she is with Robert Salter and others - watchmaker
1861 she is with Robert Salter - Watchmaker
Have you found the connection?

George Henry Birom bap 26 April 1820 parent Susan Birom "widow" at Topsham Devon
John Martin Birom bap 19 September 1821 parent Susan Birom at Topsham Devon.
John went on to be a surgeon, hardly an occupation for someone lacking in money, so he had a benefactor or the Birom family had connections.

Hi
Thanks for the reply.
Yes, that's Susan here in Topsham where I live, my problem really is where she started and who her family were. There are other Birom's in Stratton but none that match up

Susan's entry in the Probate Calendar says that she was a widow (died 4 April 1865) and that probate was granted to John Martin Birom of Topsham, said to be a "gentleman" and a creditor of the deceased.
-
The image of the baptism for John Martin Birom 19 September 1821 also having Susan as a widow
has a notation.
"having previously been baptised in Emsworth Hampshire"

Worth checking into.

London Evening Standard dated 5 April 1850
Apothecaries Hall
The article is a list of those who had passed exams to practise medicine
John Martin Birom - Exeter.
Notes
Samuel Easton Salter who died circa 1830/1831 was a Druggist and a Grocer
Western Times 14 May 1831 - Saturday
Paraphrasing
His extensive dwellings plus two other houses were to be auctioned the person to contact is Miss Hannah Easton Salter of Topsham.
It doesn't give a relationship so it is possibly the widow.
Samuel Salter who married Jane ? named a daughter Hannah Easton Salter.
The same family Susan is living with in 1841.
It looks a though Susan was from the Salter family before marrying ? Birom

Devon Will Index ref:FindMyPast
Samuel Salter 1848 of Topsham
Copy of a will document reference S 53
This is the family Susan was living with 1841. He may mention her in his will - perhaps an allowance.
Wills are always useful as they establish relationships.

Do you have the death certificate for Samuel Salter?
Who reported his death?
Registered St Thomas Union March quarter 1848 Vol. 10 page 209*
His wife Jane was buried 19 January 1847 (Reg. St Thomas March quarter 1847, Vol 10 page 225)
His daughter Hannah was died 1841. Reg Sept. quarter 1841 St Thomas Union, vol 10 page 153.
*Digital image copies are the least expensive £3.

Susan Birom was described as 'insane' in the 1861 Census. This newspaper clipping from 1836 goes some way to explaining why she was living with Samuel Salter in 1841 and subsequently his son, Robert Salter....

John Martin BIROM and Elizabeth Crosley THARPE
married 5 June 1845, by licence
at St Mark's, Kennington Park Road, Lambeth
He was (of course) a surgeon at the time.
He stated that his father was called JOHN BIROM
but gave no information about his father's 'rank or profession' so we don't know whether JMB's father was alive at the time, or what his occupation was.
Susan Hirom was supposedly a widow as early as 1820 but did not name the father of her two sons when they were baptised.
It remains to be seen whether 'John Birom' was JMB's father.
JMB may have been illegitimate and may therefore have invented a name for his father in 1845.
NB1: I had difficulty in tracking down the image of the marriage record on Ancestry because the surname had been indexed as BIRON.
NB2: And yes, JMB was actually born in Emsworth, Hampshire. He gave that as his birthplace in a couple of Census records.

Thank you for all the help. I will check Emsworth, how strange that he was baptised twice in very different places.
I will also get Samuel Salter's will, thanks again.
There are so many lies in Susan's life, John Martin Birom was her son and yet on the probate document it says she had no children - and he is teh creditor!
The possibility of Susan being a Salter hadn't occurred to me - my head is swimming
Thanks for the confirmation about Emsworth as John M Birom's POB, I can't find any records but clearly need to hunt more.
Thank you so much to everyone, this is a lot to being going on with and hopefully will clear up a fee mysteries
