Hi, hoping for help ive hit a brick wall re McAnultys in Lurgan area. Theyre recorded as Chruch Of Ireland late 1800s , early 1900s
Ive a pretty recent relative who died in the 80s at 101 years old - he was known as Tom McAnulty however from the newspaper of his death, recording his exact birth date, ive figured he was actually born James Mcanulty in Lurgan to Wiiliam Henry (sometimes just recorded either/or) McAnulty and an Elizabeth McCullough.
Now im stuck as some of Toms [James] siblings such as his youngest Annie (b.1886) are recording themselves as McNultys - such as the 1901 census her, her mother and sisters are recorded Mcnulty. This switches constantly, even Annie witnessing her sisters marriage to a Hagan as McNulty. She also signs against home rule as a McNulty. Ive seen all the siblings (i know of) birth rec as McAnulty in the late 1800s, and their parents marriage also McAnulty.
So what I have is James McAnulty (only known from his sons marriage recs) -son William Henry McAnulty m. 1878. to Elizabeth Mcullough -son James McAnulty (b.1879), Hannah (married sloan), Wiilian H, Annie
I cannot find any birth record for either William Henry McAnulty , Elizabeth MCullough or death record looking for both McNulty and McAnulty.
Ive searched newspapers - nothing on these two people. someone online said William Henry died in 1888 but ive no account of that.
My family says we are some how related to McAnultys in Newry too but I cant find this connection. Im just throwing this out there to know if anyone knows of any McAnultys coming from lurgan and if infact they where McNulty at some point (these Mcanultys started getting married in registries and then chruch of ireland if that means anything..)

There will be no civil registration of their births. Civil registration of births didn't start until 1864 so you will not find birth records for anyone born before that date. For earlier dates you need to see in a baptism record survives. Not all are available online and details vary from religion, church, and what particular clergy included. What might be included is date of baptism, Christian name of child, name of father, sometimes residence to date of baptism as well as birthdate, name of child, names of both parents (sometimes only mother's Christian name).
For reference, here's the 1878 marriage:

Here's Annie's birth in 1886 (father recorded as Henry)- father was informant (signed by his mark) and residence was the townland of Drumgar-

Elizabeth McNulty, widow, was alive in 1911 and only age 47 so she could have lived for many years or even remarried.

Civil records for Northern Ireland counties on Irish Genealogy site only go up to 1921. From 1922 onwards you'll need to search on GRONI.
https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk/
PRONI have the Valuation Revision books online (free) which go up to about 1929. Might be worth checking to see if Elizabeth stayed at the same address- changes are recorded with various ink colours and year usually recorded in right-hand column.

Hi Thanks!
From the other replies I think I may just have gotten to a point of not being able to cross reference :(
I found more on Annie after posting this, after months of nothing! But she married a Torrence and was still going as McNulty. Wish someone would have asked Tom more about his life and where he was from when he was alive!..

Thank you!
Yeah ive circled round these records, the death one would make sense.
I remember i have seen baptism records for Mcnultys but again its difficul to know if it is them or another family. If only everyone didnt love naming their family the ame names.
My family didnt seem to pass down alot of oral history which is a shame because if someone had knew they were mcnultys it would be clearer.. but yeah im wishing information from the end of the line it seems :(

If she lived in Scotland- it is common for married woman there to still use their maiden name and married name after marriage. Otherwise, perhaps the couple separated and she reverted back to her maiden name.

My view is that a change from McNulty to McAnulty is not actually a name change but rather a different way of spelling the same name.
It is a good idea to note these variations and when you have a database to check go through the DB trying all the name variations
In days past people were not as literate as they are now, surname spelling was not fixed even within families and people relied on others, like Registrars, to spell their names on official documents.
Then you have the documents coming after emigration where you might have a foreign born emigrant in their capacity as a Registrar or census taker listening to the sound of name of a emigrant from a different country. Say a US person born in Germany recording the census details of an Irish immigrant. Sometimes names were just phonetically.
