Title: 1837 brick Wall
Post by: uk2003 on Tuesday 13 September 05 18:30 BST (UK)
Hi

Because info is a bit thin on the ground pre 1837 I have never really tried to get anything before that date..........

But now I need to -  How can/do I go about locating the parents of the following people

John Hilton born 1810 Prestwich Lancashire
Hannah Hilton (Ex Horobin) born 1808 Prestwich Lancashire

I can only go back as far as May 1837 when they married "2 months before the new reg certs were issued"  :'(

This is the last Census details I have of the family in 1851

40 Rooden Lane John HILTON Head M 41 Bleacher Lancashire Prestwich
40 Rooden Lane Hannah HILTON Wife M 43 Washerwoman Lancashire Prestwich
40 Rooden Lane Peter HILTON Son U 18 Finisher Lancashire Prestwich
40 Rooden Lane Thomas HILTON Son U 12 Ag Labourer Lancashire Prestwich
40 Rooden Lane William HILTON Son U 9 Scholar Lancashire Prestwich
40 Rooden Lane James HILTON Son U 8 Scholar Lancashire Prestwich
40 Rooden Lane Jonathan HILTON Son U 1 Lancashire Prestwich

Any ideas or suggestions please

Regards
Ken

Have you had a look on Familysearch.org? There are quite a few John Hiltons and a couple born in Prestwich.

Hi Nessie

Yes I have checked on Familysearch, that is how I found the marriage which ties in with census info.

I would just love to say this from Familysearch
"Line 29. John HILTON - Ancestral File Gender: M Birth/Christening: 28 Apr 1805 Prestwich, Lanc., England " was my John Hilton that line goes back to early 1600's, the place is right but the date is wrong.  :'(

I was hoping the 1841 census would shed more light on them, but no one seems to have it

R well onward and upward I think

Ken

I had a look on the1841 census for Preswich but couldn't find them. Was this a second marriagge for John?I did spend a little time looking at the records for St  Mary's  These were just  a few HILTON baptisms I picked up

James s- Nathan and Betty
Robert s Robert and Ann
William s ? and Ann
John s Allen and Cisley
Betty d Peter and Mary  this interested me with you having a Peter in the 1851 could be a possible

I really didn't have the time to look prperly today but get back to me if you don't sort things out

Some Prestwich baptisms are on the IGI but there seems to be a John Hilton baptised on a yearly basis at about this time including

JOHN HILTON OR TOMASON
Christening:  04 FEB 1810   Prestwich, Lancashire
Father:  JAMES TOMASON
Mother:  PHEBE HILTON

With so many Hiltons is Prestwich the only way of trying to piece together the line you are interested in is to go through all the registers themselves - baptisms, marriages and most important burials to try and sort out which Hiltons are which.

No Hannah Horobin baptism showing in Prestwich though, and since the marriage in 1837 was at Manchester Cathedral (where anyone from anywhere was often married) I'm not sure it is the correct marriage you are looking for. The eldest child on the 1851 census was 18 giving a birth of circa 1833 and unless Hannah was a second wife then John and Hannah's marriage would be likelier to be earlier than the 1837 Manchester Cathedral marriage. I do not know how well Prestwich marriages are covered on the IGI. There may not be full coverage after the early part of the C19th.

Hi Dotty & Valda

Many thanks for the input. It is the Thomas Line I am following and I am still sure this 1837 marriage is the correct family

1851 Thomas aged 12
1861 Thomas aged 22 Still with parents
1871 Thomas aged 32 Married Jane Hardman - 1st child mid 1860's and moved to Trowbridge

Looked myself for Hannah but cannot find her. She may have had a child out of wedlock or the census form is wrong, my own gran was born out of wedlock in fact her mum have got married.

My next task is to get the marriage cert for Thomas & Jane that should give me the answer to his parents (I hope)

Regards
Ken

ps
Still looking for help on this  ;)
