Title: Betsey Tom(p)kin(s)
Post by: Bunnygirl on Tuesday 24 December 24 15:32 GMT (UK)
Merry Christmas Everyone
I'm looking for baptism for a Betsey Tomkins   possible St Paul's Bedford from 1832 to 35 her father is a James Tomkins. Any variation on Tompkins
I have her  marriage certificate 25 Dec 1858 to Thomas Parker which she states her father as James Tompkins deceased Farm labourer
I also have her on 1861 to 1891 census where she declares born St Pauls, Bedford & Elstow.

Thomas Parker dies in 1863 & she then marries Joseph Pestill in 1874.

Help with 1841 & 51 census for Betsey would be great

Thanks
Bunnygirl

Interesting that her first daughter is Matilda. In 1841 Martha and Elizabeth appear to be in the same building, but recorded as a different household as two Matilda Franklins (mother and infant daughter). The mother's maiden name is Howard.

Who are the witnesses to Betsey's weddings? Any clues there?

Maybe discount this one, she could be the daughter of John & Rebecca who was baptised at Kempston 03 Apr 1836

Bedford workhouse records have Betsey Tomkins and two illegitimate children Martha and Arthur admitted in December 1854, chargeable to St Pauls. The children die there 1 March 1855, both aged 4.5 months. Betsey left 15 March

Thank you all for your replies.
Betsey as I suspected started out as Elizabeth Tomkins.
I did see the Workhouse entry will have to do a bit more research on that.
Matilda Franklin (Betsey's elder sister) was witness to Betsey's marriage to Thomas Parker marriage at Bedford Register's Office 25 December 1858.

Many thanks again
