Good afternoon! For many years I've researched my paternal line and have it definitively back to Nathan White, born in the 1640's (location unknown) and died in 1698 in Portmouth, New Hampshire, U.S.A. Nathan either emigrated to or was born in New Hampshire; in 1667 he's recorded as being in Portsmouth as a Mariner. He also lived in New Castle, New Hampshire. He died in Portsmouth in 1698.
I did my first DNA test when it was a new thing and National Geographic started the Genographic Project back around 2005. That's migrated once or twice, and I've since moved to Family Tree DNA and My Heritage. After all these years, I upgraded to the FTDNA "Big Y-700" in November, and just received the results this this week. I have multiple close links to Cornwall, and one in particular is the closest.
His name is Gregory Russell. His father kept his grandmother's maiden name; his grandfather was a White whose family emigrated to Victoria, Australia, from Cornwall in the 1800's. The "Block Tree" (see attachment) shows he and I as the sole members of the R-BY144310 haplogroup; that's us in the bottom right black box "Your Branch".
Gregory has his paternal line going back to James White, 1600-1664, of St. Just, and his wife Margaret 1600-1670, also of St. Just. (see James White attachment). As I also have several other matches from England/Cornwall (as can be seen on the Block Tree; Coad, Callaway, Kindell, Polkinghorne, Masters), it would be a logical assumption (though by all means not a guarantee) that James White is related to Nathan White somehow through St. Just/Cornwall. The FTDNA "Most Common Recent Ancestor Time Estimate" (see attachment) has our link occuring between 1500 and 1850; as we know Nathan was in New Hampshire in 1667, then the date has to be before that.
I've searched GenUKI - Cornwall (and for all of England), Cornwall Online Parish Clerks, the National Archives, etc. for births, deaths, marriages, deeds, wills, etc. While I've found entries for James, Margaret, Nicholas (their son), I can find absolutely nothing for a Nathan White. Period, nobody by that name. That tells me he likely wasn't born in St. Just, or perhaps not even in Cornwall. He may even have been born in America if his father emigrated there in the 1600s.
As James and Margaret are my only solid link to St. Just (and the first clue we've had for Nathan's parents in twenty years), I'm trying to find other family members of James; his parents, brothers, uncles, etc. I realize this is getting back into the pre-1600s when records are more difficult to come by, but I have to try.
With that, I ask the group here if perchance anyone has history on James White of St Just, Cornwall, 1600-1664, and/or his wife Margaret 1600-1670, through which I might possibly trace a family link to Nathan White 1640's-1698?
Sincerely,
George Howell White
