To look for Scottish BMD info you need to use   www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

It is a pay per view site via purchase of credits  - not a subscription site.  The index is free to search.  You can look for the parental marriage & download a copy of the marriage cert which will give you their parents names & mothers maiden names

There is a McKenzie/Dickson marriage 1907 Partick

The 1911 census is only available on Scotlands People - you need to purchase credits to view the entry to establish children born between 1907-1911

Searching the births index from 1907 shows 4 births in Partick with mmn Dickson.

Just to avoid any confusion - there is a 1989 death for a Robina Howat/ Robina Syme aged 75 with a mmn Dickson.

I thought it was your Robina & she had married twice but there is a Robina Howat birth 1915 in Dumfries - mmn Dickson

Freya Ellingsen, have you viewed the 1921 census ref 644/22 44/20 Partick to establish where John birth was recorded. He is aged 36 = 1885 as per his marriage in 1907 aged 22 = 1885.

Trying to establish his mother's maiden name.

Trying to establish his mother's maiden name.
I can't decipher it either.

Use the 'Report an issue' button to ask SP to re-scan the certificate because her maiden name is illegible.

Well I thought Id got it all but after your last message Im still confused even more!

"Margaret McClure born c 1846/7-----mother of Helen Forrester McClure"

MCCLURE MARGARET & ALGIE  JOHN 1878 644 / 9 / 36 Kelvin, so was this another marriage of Helens mother? Where does the Forrester come into it? McClure a maiden name of Margaret or another marriage?
Hope I'm not confusing u...

Fran

The situation appears to be:

Margaret McClure c1845/6(maiden name) has a daughter( Helen Forrester McClure in 1865) No father recorded. I suspect the "Forrester" could be the surname of the father.

Margaret McClure then marries John Algie in 1878--BUT-- it appears Margaret & Helen are using the Algie surname in 1871 census.

Helen is not with her mother in 1871 census.

When Helen marries for the second time she is a: a widow formerly McKenzie
                                                                    b: born as McClure
c: previously known as Algie after mother's marriage

If you are able to invest £10 for 40 credits on Scotlands ( 6 credits per image)people you could download ALL the references I have posted, the marriage of Margaret McClure to John Algie will take you back another generation as well. Enjoy your research.
