Title: My Bandsman
Post by: t_creaney on Friday 07 October 05 19:22 BST (UK)
Here is another picture of my musical GGF, one of my favourite old family pictures. One is my original scanning & the other cleaned up by a friend. I was wondering what he would look like in colour. I don’t have the picture any more so can’t scan it again.

I've cleaned & adjusted the contrast on one of them. If anyone would like to use it for colouring.

I was a little too quick of fthe mark and coloured the "cleaned up by a friend" version before noticing that the original was just so much more detailed.

I don't think he could have possibly chosen a worse place to stand for colourising. Those trees could drive one insane.

Here is a very, very rough colouring to show how he probably would have looked in his uniform. He'd have looked rather smart!

Okay, here's my second and final version of this picture.

I think I put a bit too much colour variation in the grass. It doesn't look quite right to me. And those trees were beginning to haunt me, so I did something I try never to do with a picture I'm repairing and simply cropped the majority of them out.

This was my very first try at using Photoshop CS and its wonderful "soft light" layer blending to colourise a whole picture. I'm now an Adobe convert!

Hi Kiz,
I know you love the clone stamp tool, but try and add the three to your armory, I think you'll fall in love with them as well.

I think with such a vast program as Photoshop CS, I will need to break the habit of a lifetime and go and buy a book on it. Mostly I don't even read the basics in the manuals, and end up using only a tiny percentage of the available options, so I will certainly give these tools a go.

This program looks like it could almost colourise any picture with just a single mouse click!

Have a look at this tutorial. It will give you a rough idea of what you can do with the patch tool.

Thanks to everybody for all your help, brilliant work.

I managed to borrow a few pictures from distant relatives this week & with a bit of research I found this

http://www.er.band.btinternet.co.uk/history.htm

He is front left this time. One of the pictures I borrowed is a mounted version of the one on that site, in pristine condition.

Thanks again.
