I am trying to trace the parents of John ROY who married Margaret DOWNIE on the 11 May 1868 Ardrossan.
Thanks

Following extracted from "Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald" of September 21, 1900.
Mr Patrick Murray, of Murray & Co. Fish Merchants and Auctioneers of Saltcoats, gallantly rescued an 11-year-old boy who had fallen into the water at Saltcoats harbour on Tuesday last. Throwing off his coat, he jumped in and brought the boy to safety. The boy's name was William Roy and he was son of Edward Roy, dynamite worker.
Could William and father Edward be related to your John? Mr Patrick Murray was my great-great-grandfather.

John's parents where James Roy and Margaret McKenzie.
Margaret Downie's parents where Thomas Downie and Mary ?

Mary Cochrane, age 19. John Roy, age 28. Their Marriage Extract, available at Scotlands People, lists parentage. It is not the sharpest image but, should you decide to purchase, you can request a clearer image. BTW, I read John's residence as "Meikle Gott", Saltcoats. A "Gott" was a drain or large ditch.
This website will explain further regarding Gotts in the area:

I can't imagine that you're still stuck 18½ years later, but if you are, then www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk is the place to go, as q98 says.
Marriage certificates after 1855 tell you the full names of the couple's parents including their mothers' maiden surnames.

q98, interesting Gott reference. An old Glasgow map has ditches named here-aboots as Gotes.
Bests,
Skoosh.
