Hi,
In the 1871 census I've got:
George Wootton Head Married 25 Carpenter emp 1 boy Renhold Beds
MARY ANN Wootton (nee Hull) Wife Mar. 27, Wootton, Beds
George Wootton Son 4 Bedford
Emily Wootton Dau 3 Bedford
Walter John Wootton Son 1 Bedford
Mary Helen Wootton Dau 3m. Bedford
MARY Hull Mother in law Widow 57 Laundress Marston, Beds
CHARLES HULL Brother in law Unm 17 Carpenter Bedford
SARAH HULL, 15 Sister in law Bedford
Gwyn Street Bedford
RG10/1543 Page 34 Schedule 185
I have George Wootton's marriage to Mary Ann Hull at St Paul's Bedford on 7/10/1865
Can SKS look for the Hull family prior to 1871?
Cheers Rob

Hi Rob
That was a struggle. They're indexed as Hall in 1861
RG9/991 folio 86
17 Lane St, Bedford St Paul
Mary Hull head widow 46 washerwoman born Marston
John Hull son unm 21 carpenter b Marston
Samuel Hull son 12 scholar b Bedford
Charles Hull son 7 scholar b Bedford
Sarah Hull dau 5 scholar b Bedford
Elizabeth Roberts boarder widow 76 b Marston
The closest I can find to Mary Hull (Wootton) is
RG9/249 Folio 85B
Gt Cambridge St, Shoreditch, Middlesex
Mary Ann Batson head widow 47 baker and general dealer born Beds
Mary Hall niece 17 b Wotton Beds
which might be a complete red herring!
On the IGI there's a marriage between Josiah Hull and Mary Whittington in Marston on 10 Oct 1833, who had children matching some of those in 1861, baptised in the Bedford Methodist Circuit.

Hi David,
Thanks (as always) for your extensive reply.
It was very good of you to go to such lengths. I'll try and check out the Batson connection and the IGI.
I'll wade through the 1851 Census for Bedford to see if I can find them there!.
Cheers Rob

Hi David,
Further follow-up to this one.
Once I knew where to look, I soon found them in 1851
Your IGI suggestions certainly seem to pan out!
HO 107/1752 Folio 95? page 12 Schedule 49
Harpur Street Bedford
Josiah Hull H M 39 Butcher Northampton
Mary W M 36 Marston
John S 11 Scholar Marston
Mary D 7 Scholar Wootton
Samuel S 2 Bedford
Thanks again for getting me on the right track.

Hi Rob
I was reasonably confident about the marriage (otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned it!) but I am totally gobsmacked about the birthplace of Northampton. I had Josiah earmarked for the christening on 14 Jan 1811 at Wootton. The age of 39 that you've found fits perfectly, coupled with Mary Ann also being born at Wootton, which is only a couple of miles across the fields to Marston.
Perhaps he was born in Northampton but christened in Wootton?
I'll see if I can find them in 1841 (now that I know they weren't in either Bedford or Luton which I try to avoid to like the plague!)
Regards
David

That was easy. Third page.
1841
HO107/006-18 folio 7B
Marston Moretaine
Josiah Hull 30 dealer
Mary Hull 25
John Hull 2
All born in Beds
I'll lay odds that you'll struggle to find a Northampton christening!

There's a village called Wootton within 5 mins of Northampton town centre

Hi David,
Looks like the 1851 ref. must be a mistake, I've checked the1851 image again, but it looks as if Beds is most likely favourite. (taking your IGI ref into account)

Hi John,
Now you're just trying to wind us up ;)
Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi David,
Been checking out the IGI, and it seems that Josiah had a number of brothers and sisters, one of which is Mary.
Can't find a marriage for Batson/Hull at the moment though, perhaps one for another day!

I couldn't see one either. Possibly she got married in that black hole, London.
I wonder if on the census form W'ton had been written and the enumerator interpreted it as N'ton, hence Northampton. That's the best I can come up with!

Hi David,
As we are all aware interpreting census records is far from an exact science. (It would take all the fun out it, if it was!)
