Title: WW1 draft registration cards
Post by: caclancy on Monday 17 October 05 01:41 BST (UK)
Hi everyone :). I am wondering if someone can help me out with a little problem that I have.
I am looking for my great-great grandfather Samuel David Roscoe. He was born in England in the northern part is what I am told. He immigrated with his family to the U.S. and eventually to Pittsburgh, PA. He joined the navy during WW1 and filled a registration card like every male was required to do.
I am trying to locate his draft card and/or his place of birth and his parents but with the small amount of info that I do have I really don't know where to start. None of the family really know anything about him and his past. He is becoming a huge mystery that I dying to solve.
So I need a starting point and some kind person to point me in the right direction. Any help would be greatly appreciated and will not go un-noticed.
Thank you so much. caclancy

Hallo, CAClancy

Do you have any idea when Samuel was born, when he emigrated or when he was first heard of in the USA?

There are several Samuel Roscoes on censuses in England  (most from northern England) and it would help to narrow down the possibilities.

All the best
Philip

Hi Philip. How are you doing?
I don't have any concrete numbers on Samuel. I know that he was 18 or 19 when he filled out the draft card so guessing he was born 1898/1899.   I've heard that his mother's first or middle name was Anna and that was the name given to Samuel oldest child(my grandmother). I have no idea when he immigrated to the US but I know it was thru Boston not New York. When he married it was to Helen Loftus in 1919.

Sorry to be so vague. Hope that will be enough info. Thank you so much for your help. It means alot to me.

There are four Samuel Roscoes on the 1901 England census born between 1890 and 1901 (I checked Davd and Rosco, but there were no possibles found)i:

(A) ref RG13/3601 folio 47 page 12   45 St German Street, Farnworth, Bolton, Lancashire.
Samuel Roscoe, head, 42, cotton frame minder, b Bolton - Lancs.
Mary A Roscoe, wife, 37, b Little Hulton - Lancs.
Mary L Roscoe, daur, 9, b Farnworth - Lancs.
Samuel Roscoe, son, 8, b Farnworth - Lancs.
Robt H Roscoe, son, 6, b Farnworth - Lancs.

(B) ref RG13/3755 folio 21 page 5   29 Nelson Street, St George, Manchester, Lancashire
Samuel Roscoe, head, 27, tailor's machinist, b Russian Poland.
Selina Roscoe, wife, 25, button maker, b Manchester.
Samuel Roscoe, son, 1, b Manchester.(the neighbouring household heads are Polish - looks like a community)

Two families who might be related:
ref RG17/3517 folio 123 page 21   2 court, 2 house, Moss Street, Prescot, Lancashire
James Roscoe, head, 29, gas works stoker, b Prescot.
Roseina Roscoe, wife, 27, b Covenrty - Warwickshire.
John J Roscoe, son, 6, b Prescot.
Walter Roscoe, son, 4, b Prescot.
James Roscoe, son, 2, b Prescot.
George Roscoe, son, 1, b Prescot.
(C) ref RG17/3517 folio 123 page 21    3 court, 2 house, Moss Street, Prescot, Lancashire
William Roscoe, head, 34, watch tool maker, b Prescot.
Elizabeth Roscoe, wife, 29, b Whiston - Lancashire.
James J Roscoe, son, 9, b Prescot.
Thomas Roscoe, son, 7, b Prescot.
Samuel Roscoe, son, 5, b Prescot.
Lilian A J Roscoe, daur, 2, b Prescot.
William B R Roscoe, son, 6mo, b Prescot.

(D) ref RG13/3809 folio 7 page 6     26 Essex Street, Oldham, Lancashire
(head of household not listed)
Mary Roscoe, wife, 27, b Oldham.
Wilfred Roscoe, son, 5, b Oldham.
Samuel Roscoe, son, 1, b Oldham.

On FreeBMD there are six Samuel Roscoes born between 1890 and 1901:

1) Samuel Roscoe, Mar 1893, Bolton, vol 8c page 375 (probably matches Samuel in (A) above)

2) Samuel Roscoe, Mar 1896, Prescot, vol 8b page 701 (probably matches Samuel in (C) above)

3) Samuel Roscoe, Jun 1898, Wigan (Lancashire) vol 8c page 65 (died aged 2, Wigan, vol 8c page 27)

4) Samuel Roscoe, Dec 1899, Oldham, vol 8d page 658 (probably matches Samuel in (D) above)

5) Samuel Roscoe, Mar 1900, Manchester, vol 8d page 297 (probably matches Samuel in (B) above)

6) Samuel Millward Roscoe, Sep 1901, Bolton, vol 8c page 373 (born after the census was taken)

Allowing a margin on the ages, this leaves you with five possible Samuel Roscoes to choose from.  Unless the US military records can narrow the search down, the only other way I can think of to help decide which one is yours would be to order the birth certificates and hope that his middle name or his mother's middle name is given.

All the best
Philip

Hallo again!

I had a look on FreeBMD to see if any Roscoe marriages mentioned the name Anne. No luck with Anne, but these may add to the store of info for when Samuel is firmly identified:

Mar 1891, Bolton, vol 8c page 521
Samuel Roscoe married (Mary Alice Hayes or Mary Elizabeth Watkins)  - this could relate to (A) in my last posting.

Mar 1899, Manchester, vol 8d p219
Samuel Roscoe married (Sarah Elizabeth Bennett or Selina Benson) - this could relate to (B) in my previous posting.

Prescot Jun 1887 vol 8b page 890
William Roscoe married (bride's name not on same page) - this could relate to (C) in my last posting.

Good hunting!
Philip

Ellis Island has a Samuel Roscoe, aged 4, (actually 3 yrs 6 months), coming through  Sep 20, 1902.  His mother, Anne, 48, is a housewife, they are US citizens, last residence was Chorley, England, and they are headed to Joseph Roscoe, Anne's husband, in Pittsburgh, PA.

There are lines through this entry, so they didn't actually take this ship in the end.  They must have caught another one which came via Boston instead.

Possibly the reason Samuel David Roscoe can't be found on the freeBMD indexes is that he was born in the US!  Perhaps his mother took him back home when he was quite young to meet the family, and he only remembered the trip back, and that's how the family story got started.

A Joseph Roscoe m. Dec 1888 quarter possibly an Anne Baldwin in Chorley.  There is also a Jos. Roscoe with wife Ann in Chorley in 1881, she is 27 which would make her 48 in 1902; this could be them.

This family emigrated in 1882; Ann Roscoe, aged listed as '59' (must be wrongly transcribed, presumably '29'), is on the Arizona, arrived 18 Sep 1882 into Castle Garden with children Elizabeth E, 4, Peter, 3, Mary, 2, and Ann, 'infant'.
